Having the ability to administer local anesthesia in an effective way is a crucial skill needed for the management of pain in dentistry. Anxiety has continued to be a problem for learning the administration skills of local anesthesia. Multiple studies have found out that many dental hygiene students experience anxiety in administration and receiving of their first intraoral injection for local anesthesia. The independent variable in this article include effects of training needle while the dependent variable includes the levels of anxiety in Dental hygiene students when administering and receiving an intraoral injection ( Aboytes & Calleros, 2018). 

The sources of anxiety have been attributed to the complications associated with the process of administering and receiving local anesthesia. Students have awareness of the possible complications that may arise despite the administration process being safe and effective. The complications involved in the administration of intraoral injections range from minor to more severe risks. The minor risks include hematomas, trismus, and soreness at the site of needle penetration. The more severe risks include ophthalmic developments and permanent paresthesia ( Aboytes & Calleros, 2018).

Pain management through administration of local anesthesia is a significant element in the dental and dental hygiene curricula. Evidence suggests that anxiety has been shown to have adverse impacts on the academic performance of students. It is therefore important that anxiety reduction measures are put in place to have a positive impact on students. A patented training needle is a new device that has been invented currently for dental and dental hygiene educators to use in teaching their students. Evidence reveal that this device has the benefits of reducing anxiety among students prior to the process of the administration of a local anesthetic. The results findings has indicated that training needle has low impact on the anxiety levels but is a valuable device for teaching administration techniques of local anesthesia( Aboytes & Calleros, 2018).
