Emotional Intelligence at Verizon Wireless 

The success of Verizon wireless lies in its ability to innovate and envisage its future. The company plans ahead to ensure that it does not wait for the future but makes it happen. The leadership of the company has realized the need for emotional intelligence and how it can enhance productivity. The management listens with an open mind and adapts to the needs of the different markets. The ability to read none verbal and the tone of others helps in the understanding of their emotions. The leadership is determined to develop an adaptable workforce which is a key skill in emotional intelligence that includes the use of social awareness, self-awareness, and self-management to adjust accordingly. The management has a behavior-based document that outlines the way a team behaves. Employees are encouraged to think before they can respond to which a form of impulse management. The emotions of an employee drive their behavior which affects their performance (Stein, 2017) . The company ensures that its employees are highly valued which enhances their engagement and productivity. The leadership has capitalized on the management of relationship landmines and strives to enhance the performance of its employees. 

EI and Motivation 

Verizon Wireless strives to develop employees who are better at networking, positive and motivated. Such a team is likely to lead to improved performance and the success of the entire organization. The company desires to develop a strong team that is aware of its psychological state, for instance, being able to manage stress and has fewer chances of suffering from depression. It is desirable to have a team that fits in the group situation and one that is able to maintain interpersonal relationships (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . Emotional intelligence can lead to the motivation of the company's employees by enhancing their personal and interpersonal skills.

Motivation is .one of the main personal skills that employees of Verizon wireless should have. Personal skills and competence can be managed through self-awareness where the employees should be able to have emotional awareness, accurate, and self-confidence. Self-regulation is another skill that is desirable for the company. It involves issues l.ike self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, and innovation. Motivation is another skill or competence that employees should have. It includes issues like achievement drive, commitment, initiative, and optimism (Kite & Kay, 2012) . 

The employee should also have the following social skills or competence. Empathy is one of the social skills desired for improved performance. It includes issues like understanding others, developing others, leveraging diversity, service orientation, and political awareness. Social skills include the ability to influence, communicate, manage conflicts, lead, be a change catalyst, build bonds, collaborate and cooperate and build teams. 

Emotional intelligence will push the employees to achieve their goals, improve their overall quality of life and to feel more fulfilled. Daniel Coleman identified four elements that constitute motivation. They include a personal drive to improve and achieve, commitment to own goals, initiative or being ready to act on opportunities and optimism and resilience. Lack of proper motivation contributes to dismal performance. Motivated employees love what they do and do what they love. When the employees of Verizon wireless enjoy their work, they become more productive and in the end, they will deliver better results. If the employees love what they do they are motivated and such motivation drives them to work harder and generate quality products and services. This is known as intrinsic motivation and comes from within fueling the employees with the desire to overcome any challenges that they face, produce quality work and interact with the rest of the team (Kite & Kay, 2012) . There are also external factors that encourage or motivate the employees. Such issues include pay rise, a bonus check, time off and the threat of job loss and are called extrinsic motivators. 

The company should understand how the employees respond to different motivators by knowing what motivates different employees. The company should strive to motivate the employees to make them more adaptable and to develop a positive attitude at work. The employees should be able to enhance the reputation of the company, reduce absenteeism and improve the overall performance of the company (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . 

Verizon wireless should enhance positive reinforcement by rewarding the employees to improving performance. The company engages its employees through the HR portal for messaging, self-service, personalization and offering challenging work. The company also creates an opportunity for enhancing great careers and an environment that respects individuality. The company should use positive reinforcement by recognizing and rewarding a desired course of action and to encourage such practices. Some of the initiatives can include praise, offering incentives and appreciating efforts by the employees (Stein, 2017) . The company can also use negative reinforcement by continuously motivating employees to be productive, random testing in the workplace, close monitoring, removing weekends as workdays, dealing with mistakes in an improper way and reducing the number of team meetings. 

EI and Social Skills and Decision Making 

Emotional intelligence enhances the social skills and decision-making efficacy of the management team. The management develops the right skill that is needed to handle as well as influence the emotions of the employees. The management can use emotional intelligence to enhance the persuasion and influencing skills, communication skills, conflict management skills and leadership skills (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . The management also develops change management skills and is able to build bonds and team working skills. 

Emotional intelligence is a powerful tool for decision making. It enhances the ability of the management to make smart decisions that are not influenced by their emotions. Emotional intelligence ensures that the management makes unbiased decisions since the management can identify and control their emotions as well as that of the employees. They can, therefore, apply such abilities to identified tasks. The leadership can perform well if they are not influenced by anxiety or over-excitement. The decision maker ensures that they consider the influence of emotions on the entire process and eliminate any emotions that do not influence the decisions (Chauhan, 2016) . 

Effective Teams 

Teamwork is a necessity at Verizon Wireless. Effective teams need to formulate strategies, be disciplined and engage in best practices for the good of the company. The company establishes teams that are marched to succeed. The team leader is responsible for managing the team members and the set up of the team in addition to instilling discipline. The company should engage in team building activities to develop the skills required by the members to perform their duties (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . Such empowerment will ensure that the employees do not learn in front of the customer thus avoiding any mistakes and loss of reputation. 

The company should use emotional intelligence to understand and manage its employees as well as the management team. The company should enhance emotional intelligence to develop higher team functioning which promotes creativity and productivity. This can be achieved through participation, collaboration, and cooperation. The success of the team can be guaranteed where there are effective task processes that cause members to participate wholeheartedly (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . The company can achieve this by developing a sense of trust among members, enhancing a sense of group identity and a sense of group efficacy. 

Effective teams are critical to the success of the company since organizations are focusing on teamwork where more work is now done by teams which were not the case two decades ago. Enhancing teamwork requires discipline and practice and does not occur naturally. Similarly, it is desirable that all members collaborate and show initiative so that the entire team performs accordingly. Emotional intelligence will foster teamwork by stirring up social interactions and dealing with frustrations, disappointment, betrayal, and anger (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . The group can engage in small acts that make significant differences and does not necessarily involve in-depth discussions. 

Reward System 

Reward systems are essential components for the success of a company. They lead to the satisfaction of the employees which contributes to the achievement of the overall goal of the company. It is critical for Verizon Wireless to recognize the role of morale in employee performance and how monetary and non-monetary rewards can enhance the performance of the employees. The company can combine monetary issues like salaries and bonuses in addition to other reward systems like recognition and demonstration (Kite & Kay, 2012) .. The company should be able to recognize its employees through salary or opportunity for advancement which can include issues like promotion and skill development. 

Verizon Wireless can use emotional intelligence to enhance its reward system. Emotions guide the actions of the employees and therefore it is the responsibility of the management to formulate a reward system that enhances the emotions of the employees leading to improved performance. The company should recognize the influence of emotions and provide a better environment that will enhance the achievement of the desired goals (Bradberry, Greaves & Lencioni, 2009) . 

The management needs to understand the emotions that affect the employees of the company. They should be able to know how anger, fear, happiness, sadness, and disgust can be enhanced or hindered by the reward system. Group incentives for exam.ple can be useful in enhancing the emotions of the employees leading to their satisfaction and enhance performance (Kite & Kay, 2012) . A reward system can encourage collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork while at the same time motivating the employees to perform better and to achieve their objectives.
