Emotive technique in counseling comes in handy as a tool in psychotherapy. It is based on the fact that there is an interrelation between human emotions and human needs. Emotions have the ability to create a logical explanation besides guide individual conduct. A major strength in the use of this technique is the ability of self to separate from the drama and speak intimately. This helps individual come to terms with their emotions and thus develop a positive attitude towards themselves. In addition, emotive based technique can be used to tackle a wide range of psychological issues due to its ability to regulate and impact emotions.

Basing on its overall understanding therefore, psychotherapist believe that emotions have an instinctive adaptive prospect that once stimulated and worked through, may help individuals conquer challenging emotional states and maintain interpersonal relationships. Since emotive technique in counselling tends to make individuals more responsive to their internal experiences, it is therefore not recommended in instances where individuals possess inconsistent reaction to internal experiences such as contemplations, moods or bodily sensation like in patients who cannot control their impulses. In instances where the patient misleads or manipulates the therapist, trustworthiness is compromised. In conclusion, since it is a general type of therapy, individuals that seek treatment for a specific symptom of a psychological issue might be disadvantaged.

I would incorporate emotive technique in my counselling. For starters, it enables the client to open up. This will make it easy to understand the client as well as allow the client to understand me. This positive rapport will help in the setting of the general atmosphere in the therapeutic relationship. By understanding and relating to both the client’s past and recent occurrence, it will be easy to set goals and expectations. It will as well boost understanding as both verbal and nonverbal cues may be used in our communication. It will give me the right approach and counselling technique that would best fit the client’s case. By understanding the client’s feelings, it will be easier to empower them to seek self-solution for future references.
