The course has informed my thinking in a number of ways that will be important for me at a personal level and also professionally. One of the ways that my thinking has shifted is the need for collaboration and tolerating other people’s points of view. The field of psychology did not develop in a day but took many years before it became fully recognized as a field on its own. It is through the combination of ideas and concepts from different scholars that led to the development of psychology as a field. Some of the notable figures in the history of development of psychology include Charles Darwin, Descartes, John Locke, Johannes Muller among others. A scholar would come up with a concept relating to the field of psychology after which other scholars would respond to the proposed idea by way of critiquing negatively or positively or adding additional information in support of the idea or concept. In the process, the idea would get accepted or refuted and this is how the various concepts of psychology came to be. For example, Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection gave birth to the crucial concepts of adaptation, function and learning which can be used to explain a number of phenomena in the field of psychology. The main take away is that collaboration with other people regardless of their gender, race or social class is important for the development of science.

The courses has also underscored the importance of experimentation in science. Before the course, I understood that experimentation is the basis of various scientific concepts. My understanding of this concept has become more pronounced after going through the course. Most of the psychology concepts came from experimentation. What most scholars that contributed to the development of psychology had in mind were hypothesis that were tested through experimentation. The results of the experiments confirmed or refuted the hypothesis. From simple experiments such as those conducted by Charles Darwin to confirm the theory of adaptation and natural selection to complex experiments such as testing of the effectiveness of various therapeutic processes in the management of mental illness, the results proved the value of scientific experiments in informing science.

Another way that the course has informed my thinking is the importance of embracing psychology to explain some of the phenomenon that we experience in our daily lives touching on behavior and psychological responses. Now that psychology has been recognized as a fully fledged discipline, we need to take full advantage of the discipline to help resolve some of the problems we go through at an individual level and as a society as a whole. There are various theories of psychology that have been developed to explain some of these observed phenomenon and application of these theories can help in prevention as well as in the treatment of some of the psychological disorders observed. For example, the various theories of development can be used to explain the various things that happen to a child as they grow and the various things that can go wrong at different stages. The acceptance and application of psychological knowledge would go a long way in making the society a better place.

In summary, the course has helped improve my thinking or better still reinforce my thinking in a number of issues. For example, the course has helped me to appreciate the importance of collaboration with other scholars regardless of their gender, social class or race. It is through collaboration that scientific concepts are developed. In addition, the course has cemented my understanding of the importance of scientific experiments. Finally, the course has enabled me to better appreciate the role of psychology in solving our every day problems that fall in the psychology realm.
