Diversity is becoming increasing in the environment, given the rising differences in society. Discrimination is a norm that is slowly disintegrating because people have learned to embrace differences existing between and among them. The law prohibits discrimination of individuals based on various distinguishing characteristics that make them different from the rest. Individuals should receive fair treatment at all times, except when the need for differential treatment arises. Hence, there is a need to promote diversity and multiculturalism in all situations.

Sometimes it is justifiable to treat people differently depending on who is differentiating treatment and how the victims feel about it. One instant where differential treatment is justifiable is when a given position is reserved for a specific group of people. For instance, some positions are reserved for women, disabled, youths, particular races, and others. In this situation, differential treatment is acceptable. Another case where differential treatment can be acceptable is if there is a need to protect someone’s health and safety ("Exceptions", 2019). The treatment that these groups ask for should not inconvenience any other group as well. However, beyond these circumstances of acceptable differentiation, an organization should apply laws equally. The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals against discrimination in the workplace and external society (Act,2010). People should not be treated differently regardless of their race, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, or other factors considered.

Organizations and individuals should further multiculturalism and diversity to ensure equality. As a result of these practices, there will be no consequences, such as legal ones imposed on individuals. One instance when differential treatment is acceptable is when various positions are reserved for a specific group. Also, indirect discrimination is acceptable when groups receiving differential treatment are comfortable and do not ask for privileges. When an individual’s safety and health should be protected, then discrimination is lawful. Generally, there is a need to focus on diversity and multiculturalism and ensure equitable and fair treatment of people regardless of their characteristics.
