Recently I have experienced an ethical dilemma when I was working on a part-time basis as a data analyst for a casino after the normal business hours to see the completion of a very significant project that I was working on. The drama started when I realized that I was missing the piece of data that had been sent to my colleague Amos. However, having seen his password before as he logged into his computer, I decided to log in and resend the data to myself. It was a shock when I saw a mail-in Amos’ computer regarding gambling bets he had placed over the past couple of days even though the employees of the casino are prohibited from gambling undertakings to avoid any hint of conflict of interest. The fact remains that this is a matter I am supposed to report, but I was stuck in a dilemma of having to admit to violating the casino information technology regulations by accessing the computer used by Amos. I could also not go on to warn Amos because I would be forced to reveal to him the source of information. In this case, I solved the state of the dilemma by keeping to myself the secret undertakings of Amos who is a colleague employee just for the safety of us all given the point that we were on equal grounds of violating the company regulations.
In supporting my decision for this instance, it is clear that everyone have reasons for their actions. Just like in my reason for accessing my colleague’s computer to send the data to myself to effectively complete the analysis, is equally the same way that maybe Amos had his reasons of engaging in gambling bets contrary to the company regulations. Either way, if I had to report the matter of Amos undertaking of gambling bets to relevant authorities, it would have required concrete evidence to prove the fact. The evidence might have been available, and it would have caused Amos to be suspended from duty or even lose his job position or some period. On the other hand, the evidence presented would have been acquired illegally by violating one of the very significant company regulations which means going outside the law to defend the law, a circumstance that is not even tolerable in a court of law. Additionally, eavesdropping which is the manner in which I got to know the password access to Amos’ computer is also an unethical concern in a workplace.

Considering the option of dilemma that involved approaching Amos and talking him out of his misconduct of undertaking of gambling bets would have ended up unpredictably. This may have included him turning against me for illegal access to his work computer that is unethical and forwarding the matter to the relevant authorities. Such an action could have ensured that I am doomed to the extent I could talk of his unethical conduct neither do I have evidence to prove that he is participating in gambling bets. It is for this matter, therefore, that I believe the decision I took was the correct one and that observing the guidelines of normative ethics because just like a doctor would keep a patient’s medical record and information. It was needful and almost the only option that requires no sacrifice of any individual to keep the issue a secret and assume like I just managed to efficiently complete my job responsibility the normal way without illegally accessing a colleague’s computer.
