General Ethics – Ephesians 4:1- 5:21

Ephesians is the first letter of Paul to other Christians. In this book, he expounds on how Christians should live and exemplify the kingdom of God. Chapter 4, 5 and 6 are an outline of how Christians should walk according to the teachings of Jesus. The chapters deal with how the gospel should be used as a model to transform lives for Christians. These verses indicate that Christians should walk in unity and foster relationships among themselves. These verses form the nature and foundation on which Christian ethics stands. Paul seeks Christians to live a life worthy of their calling. Pau shows that as Christians we are God’s handy works created to do his good works according to how he has prepared them for us. It is important therefor to be unified as a church despite the diversities that are shared. We also ought to identify the links between our ethics and Christ’s life.

Finally, there is need to know how to live ethically in a world that is antagonistic to the teachings of the gospel. For a Christian to live ethically his behaviors should identify with Christ. Christianshould not live ignorant of God by being controlled by sin. Unlike common worldly perception where people are advised to be themselves as long as they do not interfere with other people’s freedom or in a different approach where people are advised to have strong moral values, Paul advises against the two principles as being flawed. He emphasizes on changing the inner person as anything less would lead to rebellion against God.in general Paul warns Christiansagainst evil talk that is associated with bitterness and unjustified anger as this destroys communities. He also warns against greed and sexual immorality.

Family Ethics Ephesians 5:22-6:4

Paul talks about ethics in marriage and families. He calls for maintenance of purity. According to Paul, Christians should resist promiscuous behaviors, greed and immorality since they hurt people. Inasmuch as they are common in the world today, we should not join in. It requires a difference in behavior and not separation from those who do not believe. He says that Christians should live as an example of the shining light in the dark. Instead of living in the dark, Christians should expose dark deeds unto light. They should have nothing to do with the fruitless acts of the dark. It is in these same verses that Paul speaks about wives submitting to their husbands as they do to Christ. However, submission is not forced just as Christ does not beat the Church to submission husbands should not beat their wives to it.Paul goes ahead to give a command to husbands to love their wives. It is ethical for men to make sacrifices to serve their wives as commanded by Christ.

Work Ethics Ephesians 6:5-9

Paul has a clear outline on how Christians should live their lives as true believers even at work. Paul advises Christians who steal to cease from the habit immediately. Paul emphasizes on Christian dealing with sins and struggles specifically and individually. Coming to Christ’s does not mean that your struggles with sin end. Instead, it means that Christians should resists from letting sin dwell in their mortal bodies in order to resists its lusts. According to these verses, there are certain truths that Paul reveals on management. Maters are advised to stop threatening as a form of motivation. Managers should learn to lead workers by motivating them to do that which God has placed intheir hearts. They should learn to create conditions that encourage workers to work from the heart rather than being forced. In addition, Paul tells masters to view their workers as people and treat them with respect. On the other hand, workers are being told to seek the good of their employers. As a Christian therefore, whether in leadership or not, there are certain guiding principles that must be adhered to at the place of work if you want to live according to the word of God.
