It is generally understood that employees play a critical role in defining the level of success that an organization witnesses. To ensure that the employees that they hire contribute to their bottom line, organizations should adopt carefully-crafted recruitment strategies. Ethics is one of the tools that facilitate effective employee recruitment. As they hire employees ethically, firms set the stage for impressive performance. In their article, Gommans and Musumbu (2014) observed that ethics helps organizations to recruit employees who share in their mission and are dedicated to driving performance. Another role that ethical recruitment plays is that it enables firms to promote diversity and inclusion (Webb, 2017). Today, an increasing number of firms are striving to achieve gender equality and develop workforces that reflect the demographic profile of the communities in which they operate. Ethical recruitment also allows organizations to comply with applicable laws that govern human resource management.
To promote ethical conduct, it is important for organizations to create codes of conduct which stipulate the ethical guidelines that employees and other stakeholders should uphold in their endeavors. Tasked with the mandate of creating a code of conduct for an organization, I would begin with an evaluation of best practices and the codes that similar organizations have developed. As I do this, I will gain insights into the standards that the code of conduct should conform to. Having explored the best practices, I will then proceed to understand the needs, mission and operations of the organization. Doing this will allow me to align the code of conduct with the internal environment in which the organization operates. For example, when I learn that the organization has struggled to curb such ills as fraud, I will ensure that the code explicitly forbids all forms of corruption. As part of the process of developing the code of conduct, I would also consult such stakeholders as employees. Their perspectives are important as they will allow for the creation of a code that is fair and practicable.
