Ethnic music is a traditional and typical anonymous music that is the expression of the life of people in a community.it describes ways in which music expresses historical differences and constructs identities as modern or urban societies. Different communities usually have different ethnic songs that are used to describe their way of life. This songs are usually passed on from one generation to the other. 

One form of ethnic music is the folksongs commonly known as folk music or folklore. This is generally rural music which was passed down through families and other smaller social groups. It was basically oral tradition. It was mainly learned by hearing and singing rather than reading. These songs were also associated with other activities. They were also rural in origin.one of its most visible characteristics is that it varies from one community to the other. They have different cultures. They can be formed either by villagers or churches.an example is ballad also known as Lady Isabel and the false knight by Livar Kempinnon has more than 1800 renditions.

Examples of ethnic music 

1. Schottische. 

This is music from the Scottish origin that is usually danced by couples mainly in german.it is usually danced in 2/4 times. 

This music was formed for the purposes of the schottische dance which was originated from Bohemia.it is usually popular in the Victorian era ballrooms.it left traces in countries such as Argentina(chotis),france.sweden,Denmark and many more countries. 

It is slow in nature to commemorate the slow nature of the dance. 

2. Russian traditional music 

This is the type of music that basically talks of the traditions of the Russian people. However it does not include the various forms of art music. 

Some of its local forms include Adygea, altai, buryatia and evenkia.it uses traditional instruments. Some of the festivals where it is played include; Grushinsky and nashestvie. 

Comparison 

Both music are traditional and are sang in traditional festivals 

Both of them were written in the traditional era and were passed on to the next generation. 

Both music were written by the people of that community .i.e. the Russians. 

Contrast 

While the Russian music is fast the Scottish music is rather slow 

Scottish music is performed in ballrooms whilst Russian music is performed in the open. 

Russian music is performed with traditional instruments while Scottish music is performed with one instrument.
