General Information

When developing assessment tools, educators and other parties who interact with children and adolescents must exercise caution. The assessment tool that they select must allow for an accurate evaluation of the child or young adult in question (Whiston, 2017). Personality is among the issues that counselors in educational institutions may wish to assess. Various tools have been developed to aid in the evaluation of this metric. The 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire is among the most commonly used tools.

Title

As already noted above, this tool is referred to as the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire. This title may be shorted to 16PF test.

Author

The assessment tool has been revised a number of times. Various authors have participated in the development and the revision of the tool. However, Raymond B. Cattell and Karen S. Cattell are recognized as the original authors of the test (“Sixteen Personality Factor”, n.d). Heather Cattell also receives credit for helping to draw up the manual that administrators use.

Publisher

It is important to recognize the efforts of stakeholders who ensure that assessment tools are distributed to counselors, educators and other parties. The Performance Assessment Network (PAN) serves as the publisher of the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (“Sixteen Personality Factor”, n.d).

Forms, groups to which applicable

The 16PF test is administered on a wide range of groups. Generally, the test is administered on individuals who are at least 16 years old (“List of Psychological”, n.d). Given that it assesses the very important metric of personality, this test has benefited a range of populations. These include patients, learners and employees. Some of the areas where this test may be applicable include career counseling, employee selection and management development, among others. As part of the assessment process, the administrators of this test usually provide the subjects with forms. The forms contain questions that the subject is required to answer (“Sixteen Personality Factor”, n.d).. These forms can be customized to reflect the demographic profile of the test group. It is important to note that an online version of the questionnaire is available.

Practical features

There are various features that define the 16PF test. The range of traits that it assesses is among these features. This test is comprehensive given that it accommodates 16 different traits that are used to classify individuals into particular personality types (“Access for Success”, n.d). The other feature is that these traits can be classified into five groups which correspond to the ‘Big Five’ traits that are used to define individuals. These traits are extraversion, self-control, independence, anxiety and tough-mindedness.

General type

The 16PF test is of the personality type (“List of Psychological”, n.d). This test is also classified as one that assesses general ability.

Date of publication

As already noted, various editions of this test have been developed. The fifth edition which is the most current was published in 2008 (“Sixteen Personality Factor”, n.d).

Costs, including booklets, answer sheets, scoring

As they deploy assessment tools, counselors often incur costs. The costs range from the expenses incurred in the procurement of the tool to the actual administration. A counselor wishing to acquire the tool should be ready to spend since the publisher makes the tool available for a fee. However, an online version of the same tool is available for free. Additional costs may be incurred as the counselor acquires training. The publisher also offers training manuals and score reports (“Access for Success”, n.d). These increase the costs of administering the test. The questionnaire itself also adds to the cost.

Time required to administer

The time taken to administer a test varies from one tool to the other. Typically, about 35 to 50 minutes are required to administer the 16pf test (“16pf Questionnaire”, n.d). This time should be enough for the test takers to respond to the 185 items on this test.

Purpose for which evaluated

As already noted, the 16pf test is used to determine one’s personality. It relies on the responses that the test takers provide to establish their personality. The insights from this test can then be used to provide career counseling and to manage employees (“Access for Success”, n.d). Couple counseling is another purpose for which this test is administered.
