1. UNPROVEN STEM CELL THERAPY CAUSES THREE WOMEN TO GO BLIND

Stem cell therapy has increased over the years due to its popular outcome of results that seems to be apparent in yielding many results to people who experiment with it.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE THERAPY

In a related case, two women aged 77 and 88 years were going to get treated for an eye disease known as Macular Degeneration, apparently they succumbed to blindness out of a stem cell procedure gone wrong in a clinic.

The procedure was a test trial to be able restore the eyes and get rid of the disease that the two women previously had. This is according to Agence France-Presse international news agency in Paris (AFP.com) https://www.newvision.co.ug/new_vision/news/1448711/unproven-stem-cell-therapy-causes-women-blind

3. COMPARISON OF READINGS ASSIGNED TO TYPES OF THERAPY

Adult stem cells that scientist have known to be found in humans are those related to therapies dealing with blood, skin, the gut lining and in some rare cases the brain however adipose derived stem cells have no concrete evidence in supporting macular degeneration disease. Proving that the eye does not have enough stem cells to regenerate critical tissue that can also avoid scarring (Rao, 2012).

4. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

The therapy of using adipose-derived cell is an experimental unproven approach. The adipose-derived cell has been used in many areas to generate treatment however the stem cell is not capable of regenerating the eyes and helping in the process of healing according to the scientists who have specialized in the biological nature of stem cells. Adult stem cells have a limit to which they can produce cells hence only produce specialized types of cell.

5. GOLDMAN ARTICLE

According to Brian Goldman the use of stem cells has positive results yielding from specific cases dealing with the heart but the other claims are not entirely true or proven, therefore all the people including the journalists and clinics providing information that stem cells can cure multiple areas of the body are falsely exploiting people to acquire money from them (Ansari, Kuriyan & Albini, 2017).

Procedures of stem cells range expensively and are usually taken in courses. This further creates an opportunity for clinics to take advantage of the hope that people have in restoring their health. Unregulated treatment even further extends the exploitation by not having standard which clinical doctors do not prescribe unnecessary procedures to people which they have no choice but to adhere to (King & Perrin, 2014).

6. IN RELATION TO GOLDMAN ARTICLE

The therapy of restoring vision to the eyes is a sensationalist claim which is not supported by the scientific research since the clinic asked to be paid an amount of $5,000 by each of the women, when clinical test trials do not ask for money from clients instead they even offer money to those completing the trial test to encourage more people to come and take the tests (Goldman, 2007).

A small study published by Lancet also exaggerated the ability of stem cells when 17 out of 24 patient’s showed reduced symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis and it was written that they were cured which was false

7.RECOMMENDATION OF THE CONDITION

I would not recommend a patient to take part in the therapy simply because the procedure does not guarantee at least even fifty percent chance that a person will be able to regain a fully functional eye through stem cells as of yet, which several procedures are being done out of luck.

Many clinics will promise results however not all of them have good intentions of restoring patients health. In addition to that I would recommend patients with macular degeneration to seek eye specialists to provide more information on the condition, which it can be treated or improved depending with the stage and age of the person (Žižka & Šedý, 2017).
