I would respond to my colleague by encouraging them to view people, in this case students’ social-economical functions without any preconceived notions. I would actually give my colleague instances in the past, that even I wrongly perceived people because of their culture and attitudes without realizing. Despite this, as teachers it is very important for us to not label, perceive and stigmatize students based on their ethnicity or culture. If we do not try to stop using these cultural lenses we have, we may inadvertently perform certain practices that are discriminatory, and could end up becoming policies. I would also encourage my colleague to look at the 5 core SEL competencies to help them become more self-aware of their emotions and perceptions.
I would remind my colleague that as educators it is our job to embrace all students. Also, we have to make the students feel like they are just the same as everyone else and will be given the appropriate attention that they need. As educators it is not right for us to view students as problematic or different. This could result in teachers having preferences as to whom they would like to teach, which would set a bad precedence for other teachers and badly affect students. Additionally, as teachers we must continuously check and evaluate whether we are using the 5 core SEL competencies to ensure we are being unbiased.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
I would tell my colleague how it is imperative that they do not judge students based on where they come from. All students must be given the chance to excel irrespective of their background. As teachers it is our job to ensure that we appreciate and encompass all students, a lack of which would increase student discrimination which is detrimental to the students’ development. Teachers must constantly look to the core SEL competencies to avoid discrimination, stigmatization and any other views that would deter student development.
