Forensic psychology is a discipline that involves the application of psychological principles to the legal system. Learning this subject has been an enlightening period for me. I have always been an avid reader of crime books. It is always a thrill to read and form a mental picture of how a crime was committed and how the police were able to connect the dots and apprehend the criminal. This module has clarified some of my unanswered questions. The most valuable lesson I have learned in this course is the need to have solid clinical knowledge for me to become a good forensic psychologist. These skills include interviewing skills, examination skills and the ability to correlate these findings to some up with an impression. The surprising thing is that I will also need to have a solid legal background for me to be a good forensic psychologist. This made me wonder whether I actually needed to go to some sort of a law school.
I am thrilled by crime stories. Therefore, I intend to become a crime psychologist especially in the setting of kidnaps. In this setting, I will seek to unravel the psychological state of the kidnappers and help in the negotiation process. I would like to learn more on the concept of “mens rea”. This is a topic I find intriguing. I always wonder how a crime suspect is declared unfit for trial. The concept of temporary insanity also confuses me. I intend to unravel these mysteries by reading cases on murder cases and how the issues were handled from the time of arrest to trial. I also intend to sharpen my legal knowledge skills by reading various journals related to crime. This will give me a good legal backing in understanding the psychological aspects of crime.
