A hypothesis is a precise, testable statement that the researcher predicts will give the anticipated study outcome. A hypothesis entails proposing possible relationships between dependent and independent variables. There are different types of hypotheses used in a scientific research paper. One is a simple hypothesis, null hypothesis, and an alternative hypothesis commonly known as an experimental hypothesis. The alternative hypothesis there is a relationship between the dependent and independent variables been studied ( Cherry, 2020) . A simple hypothesis predicts the relationship between two variables. A null hypothesis states that there is no relationship between the two variables been researched. Hypothesis serves several purposes in research. A hypothesis seeks to find answers to the question under study. A hypothesis also guides the researcher to observe and experiment on a specific topic ( Kabir, 2016) . Another function of the hypothesis is that they are the start point for investigation, and they help in verifying observation.
A strong hypothesis should propose a relationship between two or more variables and should be testable. Before developing a strong hypothesis, adequate research is required to determine specific variables. Examples of strong variables include; Consumption of sugary beverages daily leads to obesity (simple hypothesis). There is no statistically significant relationship between sugary drink consumption and the rate of obesity among adolescents aged 12-17 living in California. Adolescents aged 12-17 living in California who consume sugary drinks daily are likely to become overweight or obese compared to those who do not consume sugary drinks.

Scientific research papers require a testable hypothesis to develop accurate results after deducing certain logical deductions and inferences. A testable hypothesis should be clear, specific, and precise, state the relationship between variables, and simple to understand ( Cherry, 2020) . When writing a hypothesis, the researcher needs to follow some guidelines. First, the researcher needs to ask a question; next is to perform background research. The other step is to create a list of possible explanation that needs to be explored to arrive at the most suitable idea that cannot be disapproved ( Kabir, 2016) . The last step is to construct a hypothesis based on the information gathered and then go-ahead to test it for accuracy.
The desired area of study is on the rising cases of obesity among young people. The hypothesis for this study will be "Inadequate physical exercise, and sedentary behavior increases the risk of obesity among young people."
