The purpose of this paper is to analyze a movie using three concepts I will apply are friends with benefits, emotional attachment, and platonic relationships. Friend with Benefits is a romantic comedy starring Jamie (Mila Kunis) and Dylan Harper (James Timberlake). In the film, Jamie takes up the role of an executive headhunter located in New York while Dylan plays the role of an art director. Jamie persuades Dylan to come and work for GQ, where she is bound to get a commission. Dylan and Jamie agree to engage in a no strings attached sex. However, as time goes by, Dylan and Jaime begin developing an emotional attachment. This is evident when Jamie and Dylan visit the latter’s parents. However, with time Jamie and Dylan end their relationship, and after Dylan has an encounter with his father in New York, he decided to look for Jamie and confess his love to her.

The term friends with benefits refer to a relationship between male and female where they hang out and engage in sex without any form of emotional connection. This is evident in the film, whereby during the first encounter between Dylan and Jamie, they agree to have no-strings-attached sex. The friend with benefits concept is in line with the social exchange theory, which assumes that people select actions that bring the highest rewards and reduced costs. This makes people view social relations as being primarily an exchange of services, in this case, sex.

Emotional attachment refers to a relationship between two people that is based on meaningful foundations that can lead to love. This concept is linked to the cognitive theory, whereby people perceive and evaluate a relationship or sexual event basing on the difference it makes to one. In the film, Dylan realized that he has some love for Jamie, and she meant much to him than only a sex partner. This led Dylan to go and look for Jamie at the Central Station, where they decide to go on a real date.

A platonic relationship is a relationship that is not physical but purely spiritual, and there is no sexual or physical desire. From the film, Jamie asks Dylan that they should not engage in sex anymore as she would like to start dating again. Instead, she suggests that they can become friends, and this leads to the development of a robust platonic relationship.

The psychology of human sexuality analyses the impact of cultural, social, evolutionary, and biological factors on sex. The essay has highlighted the friends with benefits, emotional attachment, and platonic relationship concepts of human sexuality basing on the film Friend with Benefits .
