The quality and nature of public health leadership will be quite critical in the future. The future leaders will have to consider the increased focus of the practitioners to entire activities in all disciplines, which have impact on the health of the public. Therefore, there will be the objective of solving the diverse problems that affect the health of the public. The future characteristic that leaders will have to face is expanded areas of involvement for the public health departments as more forces continue coming together. It is also vital to note the increased level of awareness about the interrelationships of factors that influence health, which will characterize the future industry of healthcare. Innovation will also be a key objective that future leaders will continue facing in the public health sector (Johnson, 2013). There will be need for innovative public health leadership, which will then enable the society to make effective choices within all the areas of human endeavor that promote healthcare.

It is expected that there will be changes in the public health problem solving mechanisms and efforts. The means leaders in the healthcare sector will use to find solutions to various health problems are bound to improve and become advanced. For instance, the application of technology in finding solutions for the health problems of the public is expected to be enhanced and take an advanced role (Johnson, 2013). A lot of the public healthcare processes are bound to be done using developed technological solutions. It is also vital to note the fact there will be increased provision of the home-based healthcare programs (DeLaurentis & Callaway, 2004). The record management systems of public health institutions will become computer-based and this will ease operations as well as lead to solution of many problems that have been associated with the manual operations. All these changes in the problem solving efforts will occur because the society will be facing quite new and unprecedented complications, different from the ones experienced currently (Institute of Medicine Committee on Assuring the Health of the Public in the 21st Century, 2003).

The first problem solving approach that appeals to me is the system approach to public health. Systems approach implies that all the departments have a harmonized and integrated framework of providing solutions to the public health problems (Johnson, 2013). While a public health system has sub-systems and departments, this approach provides that all the branches work in an integrated manner guided by the same goal of alleviating the specific problem in the society. This approach is quite effective since it provides economies of scale and also leads to effective and efficient solutions to the public health problems (Trochim et al., 2006). The second problem solving method that appealed to me is the public health policy. Public health policy implies issuing guidelines and procedures of solving a given problem. In this case, the public health leadership gives the actions that are prohibited and the ones permitted with the main intention being alleviating a given problem. It is a very effective approach. The third method of problem-solving, which appealed to me, is effective management. Effective management refers to the use of skilled and qualified leaders who implement perfect decisions in healthcare management. Finally, I was impressed by the conflict management approach. This approach involves focusing on the solution of feuds within the public health system (Johnson, 2013).

I strongly feel that learning about these methods of problem-solving will contribute to my future public health leadership career since I got the right concepts and knowledge on the perfect way of applying them to get optimal results.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) should provide information on the best practices for the public health leaders when faced with the problems. The IOM has to provide information that can educate the public health leaders about the effective ways of mitigating some of the problems. IOM may also provide recommendations on some of the basic and most effective forms of technology, which leaders should strive to apply in their problem solving efforts.
