Stereotypes do not reflect the existing differences between men and women. Stereotypes impact the way both genders perceive themselves and the relationship between genders. This means that negative stereotype against women means they get the short end of the stick in our society. Society tends to view individuals as representatives of particular social groups.

Women are stereotyped as the source of warmth and care while men are seen as assertive and performers. This means that most power hierarchies are male-dominated. Across the globe, women occupy only 21% of parliament seats. In the US, only 5.2% of women are leaders of fortune 500 companies. Women are stereotyped as care-givers and not leaders. This stereotype is prevalent even in careers. Women tend to take care-giving careers such as teaching and nursing, while men take up agentic professions such as engineering. The leadership stereotypes mean that women are less likely to get promoted, and when promoted, they are seen as aggressive when they are leaders (Latu, 2017).

Native American Mascots Debate

People who use the native mascot argue that it preserves the American natives’ history of the fighting history that has been extinguished by modern America. People say that native mascots bring more excitement to games because they represent the capability od barely restrained violence. The American scouts use the noble savage representation to instil discipline. People oppose these views as the noble native is a stereotype. It whitewashes the history of Native Americans and the segregation and discrimination they have suffered (Houska, 2015).

There is a danger in viewing native mascots as savage warriors with undying spirit because it reduces the natives as a defeated people whose memory is represented by mascots. Native mascots do affect the self-esteem of the native American tribes, a whole population being stereotyped to a mascot will do that. Dehumanizing an entire race is wrong, and it does affect how native American communities are perceived.
