The call of Abraham is critical in the redemptive history. According to Grace and Saving (2020), Genesis 12 is the most significant section in the whole of the book of Genesis. The first eleven chapters in the book of Genesis focus on the consequences of sin. However, Genesis 12 concentrates on reconciliation with God, restored blessing, and hope of redemption. The paper highlights how God’s promise to Abraham contributes to God’s portrayal in the bible and its application in modern life.

What does the threefold promise to Abraham contribute to the bible’s portrayal of God?

The promise that God made to Abraham shows that He is worthy of praise and worship. He is worthy to be given glory, honor, and power, for he created everything and all things that exist by God’s power. He is also worth Christians leaving all possessions behind like Abraham did in order to follow him. When Abram was at Haran, he accepted and yielded to God’s call and took the largest steps of faith. God commanded Abram to leave his country, father, and possessions to a land he will show him (Gen 12:1). Abraham accepted the call and followed God’s instructions. Jesus expects the same from his disciples. In Matthew 10:37, He says that a person who loves their mother or father more than Him is not worthy of Him.

The promise God made to Abraham reveals that He is a sovereign savior. At the beginning of Genesis 12, there is no sign that Abram was seeking after God. Instead, he worshipped in Mesopotamia, where idolatry was common (acts 7:2). But God showed compassion and mercy to him. Grace and Saving (2020) argue that God gave Abraham divine grace. God reminds Joshua of this by emphasizing that he took his father Abraham from the other side of the river (Joshua 24:3). God is seeking shepherds (Grace & Saving, 2020). He called Samuel when he was little and Appeared to Moses in a burning bush. Jesus also tells His disciples that they did not choose Him, but Jesus chose them.

Is there anything in modern life that is similar to this patron covenant?

God swore the oath to bless Abraham on his integrity. God promised Abraham he will bless him abundantly, give him a son and make him a father of many nations. Abraham waited in faith for God to fulfill the promise, and he witnessed the fulfillment of the promise. Today, people swear oaths by something greater than them, like the Bible. Chiroma (2020) argues that an oath confirms their statement and it eliminates disputes.
