Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy that puts emphasis on an individual’s relationships, environment, and experiences. The ultimate goal of gestalt therapy is helping an individual be aware of their actions and how they handle their activities. Therefore, it offers an individual the chance to learn to accept change and value themselves in their environment. The empty chair technique is one of the mostly used methods in Gestalt therapy. It is an approach aimed at allowing one to work through internal or interpersonal conflict. More specifically, it helps one analyze a situation from an entirely different perspective and receive insight into one's behaviors and feelings. 

Additionally, the technique helps one verbalize what is conflicting and creates concrete out of abstract. Taking on the other individual's role allows one to gain the insight of that person into their own perspective and theirs. The chair represents part of the individual or the internal conflict that they experience in different aspects of themselves, to gain insight into their struggle. The discovery aspect of the therapy and the empty chair technique. Empty chairs have offered compelling communication over the years and a powerful tool for insight and understanding.
