Harassment and discrimination are costly issues that employers and employees experience daily across the country. As indicated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), discrimination in employment is treating a person differently or unfairly and is based on individual characteristics such as race or sex that is safeguarded under the anti-discrimination laws. On the other hand, harassment in employment is illegal and it is based on individual status that is protected under anti-discrimination laws.

Harassment and discrimination significantly relate to the ethical dimension of decision making in various ways. Harassment and discrimination contribute to biases in decision making. Decision-making biases that result from harassment and discrimination influence on how people view each other at work as well as the world. Harassment and discrimination influence employees by affecting the quality of life which consequently disrupts their job satisfaction and work engagement. Additionally, harassment and discrimination impair employee decision making by decreasing their motivation, commitment as well as enthusiasm level of employees. Both harassment and discrimination influence the ethical dimension of decision making in the workplace because they increase biases in decisions made by both the employer and the employee.

Individuals that are harassed or discriminated can suffer from numerous significant negative consequences. Because of harassment and discrimination at the workplace, self-esteem, well-being, social relations, as well as self-worth of a person, can severely be influenced. As opined by Fnais (2014), discrimination and harassment can contribute to mental health problems such as heightened stress, anxiety, and depression that can eventually affect a person’s decision making. Further, harassment and discrimination decrease employees’ productivity because they feel disgruntled and loses interest in working hard. To prevent harassment and discrimination from influencing the ethical dimension of decision making, it is significant to promote how individuals can interact with each other or a particular group or further foster discrimination and harassment awareness that can assist in fair decision making.
