The cost of uninsured patients does not only reflect on themselves due to the money they have to pay to obtain healthcare services but also on the government, which has to subsidize for their healthcare. While uninsured persons and their children use less healthcare than insured one, their healthcare cost adds up to the national spending on healthcare. Similarly, homeless people have a high propensity to contract diseases than those who live in homes. I concur with the Harvard study that homeless people are more prone to diseases because of the conditions they go through, including living outside where they could be prone to physical injuries, contracting infections, and psychological ailments. Consequently, the homeless need more healthcare attention than those who live in properly made homes.

Addressing chronic health conditions such as diabetes and cancer requires support from people close to a patient. It is hard to manage such conditions as diabetes and chronic kidney failure in the absence of supportive members of the family. Since homeless people are often alone and in the streets, they have no people to support them in overcoming challenges related to their conditions. The complications of homelessness, including the inability to track and identify permanent healthcare facilities from where to acquires health services, is a big challenge in the management of chronic conditions. Research indicates several barriers to optimal care among homeless populations, including transportations challenges, complicated healthcare eligibility, service fragmentation in a healthcare institution, and inability to afford.

Medicaid is the government insurance scheme that provides health coverage to American people on a premium or fee basis. The state and federal government-funded medical insurance scheme also provide provide coverage to vulnerable people, including low-income adults, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with some types of disabilities, including kidney disease. Funded by the federal government and run by states, the program aims at providing medical cover to members of the society who cannot pay for their healthcare. I think as American citizens, we must take care of our own and prevent the consequences of illnesses from causing challenges among members of society. It is, therefore, necessary to even cover additional people who may not be able to cater to their healthcare, including the homeless.

I think Americans have the right to health and to access healthcare services regardless of their income and status in society. It is within the fundamental rights contained in the bill of rights for every person to have access to the highest possible standard of mental, physical and psychological health than include and not limited to access to healthcare services, adequate food, healthy working conditions, and a clean environment. Every American ought to have access to health and conditions that allow for healthy living. This includes universal access where healthcare is affordable to all, availability of infrastructure, non-discriminatory, acceptability, and dignity where providers respect the dignity of people and quality to allow medically appropriate standards to be used.

I support Senator Green's bill that homelessness is considered a medical condition as it is a factor that denies an individual the ability to maintain quality standards of health. The homes are subjected to factors in the environment that make them prone to illness. By making homelessness a medical condition, the government will also be more compelled to address the condition.
