The human body harbors different forms of microflora that play a significant role in the health and functioning of the body which has bacteria and the human body symbiotic. Microflora refers to the gut bacteria that interact with each other and a person’s immune system in ways that influence the progress of diseases. The gut flora is important as they assist the body in extracting energy from food, building the immune system and protecting the body from infections and diseases. The microflora is also responsible for various metabolic functions such as fermenting and the absorption of undigested carbohydrates in the body. The interaction of microflora and the immune system allow the body to fight off diseases and infections by ensuring that immune cells mature and develop in the normal rate.

The human intestines have hundreds of bacteria species, which play distinct roles in the health of a person. However, for these bacteria to perform effectively in enhancing the health of a person, it is important to consume foods that have different nutrients. These nutrients support the growth and development of diverse microflora which are healthy for the body. This is because the more species of bacteria a person has in their body, the greater number of health benefits they are able to derive from the microflora. Thus, consuming a diet consisting of different food types is a source of diverse microflora, which supports health metabolic functions and strengthens the immune system. Human beings are encouraged to eat foods that consist of high percentages of vegatables, legumes, beans and fruits – since these are believed to have a high amount of microflora. Additionally, fermented foods are a great source of microflora as they consist of bacteria that aid in the conversion of sugars into organic acids or alcohol.
