High reliability organizations (HRO) are those that do not take any chances on risks. That means the management teams of such organizations have tools meant to evaluate and analyze various practices and operations taking place in the organization from time to time. Most healthcare organizations fall under the category of HRO because they strive to ensure the safety of patients. Clearly, the use of checklists before, during, and after various procedures in these organizations can go a long way in ensuring that the practices and procedures are safe. According to Oster & Braaten (2017), although nurses need to focus on delivering high quality care, they also need to be held accountable for assisting to build safe systems of care. Use of checklists in these organizations can help increase efficiency and promote safety as Dr. Atul explains in the video.

I feel that Dr. Atul’s checklist can be useful at my place of work, especially before any healthcare interventions are applied to the patients. Sometimes, I feel that before nurses attend to the various patients, they need to ensure that they maintain high hygiene standards. Therefore, before going to the wards, nurses need to ensure that they wash their hands properly using sanitizers and in the event they have duties in the surgical wards, they need to wear gloves. In that sense, they will minimize transmission of infections to the patients, as well as protect themselves.

The common checklist I have seen being utilized in healthcare is a criteria used to discharge patients especially those who had been admitted previously. Before the patient is discharged, several aspects are marked before a recommendation can be given for discharge. Such a checklist has worked because most healthcare workers are accustomed to; they have be doing that for a long time, and therefore, embraced the practice.
