The paper will discuss instances of hostility in Egyptian society and how they have affected the community in general. An in-depth review will be done to describe the bullying situation in Egyptian society adequately. Hassan, Mehanna, & Samra (2013) carried out a study to assess the attitudes of Egyptian young men toward sexual harassment of women. The study showed that a significant number of young men have either harassed women or have friends who have attacked women via words, staring and less commonly, touching. This can be attributed to the social norms in Egypt where the woman is perceived as inferior to the man. The norm is the woman was created to please the man. In this instance, the women experience hostility from the men, hence a situation of bullying.

Additionally, the study also revealed highly conservative gender norms among young men. They encourage limited female education-up to secondary education- to preserve an upper hand and affirm superiority in their relationship. Moreover, employment was only supported if it did not interfere with the men’s perceived rights and needs, insisting that wives should be home before their husbands to respond to their needs. The instances of bullying do not stop there; they also affect the international society as a whole.

In Islamic destinations, female tourists face the challenge of negotiating their way through male constructed local norms. Brown & Osman (2017) carried out a study to describe the female tourist experience in Egypt as an Islamic destination. The findings in the study showed that female tourists’ experiences were significantly influenced and often involuntarily altered by unwanted male attention and sexual harassment. This was due to the female tourists feeling the need to fit into the local female norms of behavior to safeguard themselves.

From the reviewed articles, bullying in Egypt is prevalent and has had significant implications both in the local society and the international community. However, the adverse effects associated with bullying indicate that it is a virus that needs an antidote and should, therefore, be shunned in modern society.
