The terms left and right wing were developed from the European parliamentary practice of having political parties that preferred changes both in the social and political arena sitting on the left while the those parties that were against the changes sat on the right of the presiding officer (Magstadt, 2017) . However, the terms were first used during the French revolution in 1789. Since then, the term is used in describing political inclinations. This paper will focus on the left wing and how it benefits the public good.
Ideologies of the left are of the idea that people ought to live together in harmony and without wide differences in wealth and other social aspects. Different from ideologies on the right, public goods are of more value and importance than private wealth and therefore public goods receive the first priority in this view (Magstadt, 2017) . Socialism for example is aligned to the left because it is against private ownership of possessions. In addition, business in an environment that is both fee and competitive is actually the best and the only method that can ensure prosperity for all according to this ideology (Magstadt, 2017) .

Left wing ideologies are against individualism, individual ownership of property and individual profits. Instead, individuals, political parties and states inclined to the left propose a system that is founded on economic collectivism and group ownership as a way of producing and distributing goods and ensuring responsibility in the society (Magstadt, 2017) . Due to the fact that left wing politics tend to focus on the welfare of the society members, they create a positive impact on the public good.
The ideology places a concern on people who society thinks that they are disadvantaged or less fortunate when compared to others. In addition, unjustified inequalities in the society are minimized or eradicated such that everyone has an equal opportunity and access to goods and services (Magstadt, 2017) . The perspective ensures that there is equality in healthcare provision, education and other needs. It because of this perspective that programs such as Medicare, Medicaid etc. are in existence with the aim of ensuring access to healthcare and reduce disparities in health care provision.
Leftists are hostile towards the interests of traditional elites who comprise of the wealthy individuals in the society and the aristocratic and are concerned with the interests of the working group. The ideology propose that social welfare should be the most important aim of any government or authority (Magstadt, 2017) . Socialism is usually the standard ideology of the left wing in many countries. Communism is very radical and therefore not common among left wingers. Political views inclined to the left propose social security in which individuals are empowered to purchase food and goods in a private market instead of soup kitchens that can be publicly offered. Different from the right wing, the left wing does not support institutional measures such as student grants that mostly favor the rich over the poor (Magstadt, 2017) .
Besides social welfare, left wingers also propose that human beings have a duty to take care of the environment. Most of the left wing perspective about environmentalism comes from the belief in duty of ownership (Magstadt, 2017) . This collective ownership of the environment means that people ought to take good care of it. By taking care of the environment, public good is ensured because human beings depend on the environment in very many ways.
In conclusion, the left wing advocates implementation of public policies that minimize or eradicate inequalities in the society. This is done by implementing the following:
Minimizing or eradicating legal protections for individual possessions rights
More regulation in the context of private profits and economic activities (Magstadt, 2017)
Strict limitations on wealth inheritance rights
Increased tax on rich individuals and the middle class in the society
Provision of state services that are supported by taxes (Magstadt, 2017)
Financial assistance to the poor individuals in the society.
