Mise-en-Scene

Movies have become an integral part of people’s lives as they provide important life lessons and entertainment. While creating films, different techniques are applied by the creators to ensure that the intended purpose of the movie is conveyed to the audience. Similarly, the producers of Blade Runner and My Darling Clementine have applied different techniques to convey the movie’s message. Below is a comparison of the mise-en-scene of both films.

Setting

The intensity in the futuristic setting in Blade Runner takes the audience into a fantasy world that directs the viewer's attention. The setting aims at getting the audiences' concentration. In contrast, the scene from My Darling Clementine used the setting to indicate historical and geographic events. Furthermore, the setting made the audience reflect on the mood, themes, and style of the production.

My Darling Clementine used bright lighting to reflect the mood of the scene and the activities happening around. The lighting represented happiness and humor in the scene. In Blade Runner , the lighting the mise-en-scene technique used dark lighting to represent a genre of the movie. The low lighting in Blade Runner indicated intense activities, thus brought out the genre and mood in the movie.

Depth of Space

Distance between people, objects, and the camera determines the depth of the movie. The depth of space used in My Darling Clementine showed happiness and love. The scene shows characters holding hands and dancing. Therefore, the closeness of space indicated happiness. Nonetheless, the depth of space in Blade Runner was distant, thus indicating a sign of mistrust between the characters and tension.

Costumes

In Blade Runner , the costumes used showed different actors; the doctor was in official wear while the patient acted anxiously. The costumes indicated the environment in which the scene took place (Kalmakurki, 2019). However, characters in My Darling Clementine used official costumes that indicated the seriousness of the scene and the event that was happening. Besides, the costumes indicated the social status of the characters in the scene.

Production Design

The production design showed the kind of story to expect in Blade Runner , showed the mistrust between the characters, the actors' feelings, and the raising concerns in the patient's behavior. The production design expressed the events to be expected in the movie. In My Darling Clementine , the production design showed humor, the social status of the community, and cultural events.
