In determining the truth behind any hypothesis, it is important to trace back the research process followed in the scientific method. Steps were taken to derive the findings and results of the study are only as necessary as the steps taken. One such example issued is that of mice and the result that coffee affects the amount of blood glucose concentration (Yamauchi et al., 2010). There are steps taken in the scientific method, observations to be made during each step and various assumptions that are imposed on the study before, during and after commencement to determine these results . The following paper researches on the above conditions in the experiment mentioned. It analyses the experiment conducted by the steps, observations, assumptions, and conclusions made.
In the above research, the experimental design utilized is counterbalancing where there are a control and experimental group utilized to measure the results of the experiment. The first step taken in the scientific method was to develop specific objectives and a hypothesis to be proven. An example of an objective is to determine the effect of coffee intake on mice. Another objective is determining the exact amount of time to which the coffee started affecting the blood glucose levels of the mice. A third objective is to determine how much of an impact the coffee had on the blood glucose concentration of the mice (Good, 2001). How much it differs from the original status of the mice before ingesting the coffee. The second step would have been dividing the mice into two groups, one to act as the control group that would be taking water while the other as the experimental group taking coffee, that is 11 mice as the control group while ten act as the experimental group (Good, 2001). Coffee and water in this experiment serve as the independent variables while the dependent variables are those which the scientists measure , for instance, the weight of the mice, heart rate, and blood glucose concentration. Each of these mice would have to have similar characteristics with limited differences; all other factors should remain constant. Once these objectives are set , the scientists developed the hypothesis to be proven, that is, that the intake of coffee affects the decreases the amount of blood glucose concentration.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Before commencement of the experiment, the scientists would take the measure of the factors and characteristics of the mice at the start. The information serves as base data or dependent variables for measuring the progress of the experiment (BUDDIES, 2017). The experiment then commences, and the scientists make significant observations. For instance, taking the measure of the weight of the mice before the commencement of the experiment , and periodically check for any fluctuations among the control and experimental group. The scientists would then have to do research online to ensure that they are not making any mistakes during the research study; this would involve conducting an online search or background search of similar past experiments. In this experiment, the independent variable is the coffee and water (BUDDIES, 2017). After formulating the hypothesis and conducting the experiment to completion, the scientists may want to repeat the experiment using different brands of coffee to ascertain the validity of the results collected in the experiment . From the experiment , the hypothesis derived is that the intake of coffee reduces the level of blood glucose levels in mice.
In the research described, I believe the hypothesis derived was proven. The research process took into account enough subjects to act as both control and experimental groups. The control group comprised of 11 subjects offered enough data to conclude the effects water had on the subjects . In the experimental group, the ten mice selected were enough subjects. They provided variating details on the effects of coffee in their blood system. The methods used in determining the results of the research can be said to be suitable for this research as they provided an adequate view of what was in question and the changes observed during the whole experiment. However, the research study provided a bias in the measurement of the data (BUDDIES, 2017). The research study did not provide the details of the data collection methods and hence opened the way for many assumptions and biases within the study . Also , details of the sampling process were not provided . Information regarding how the mice were selected and from which population can serve as a crucial point to ensure there is no bias (Good, 2001).
In conclusion, in the field of research, it is important to identify the effects of different types of items, products or compounds on living organisms to determine the effect they would have on human beings. In determining responses, different drugs have, such experiments are utilized to determine how well, or how poorly a particular substance affects human beings. On a personal level, such experiments can be used to increase knowledge on ordinary substances used in everyday life that can significantly improve the health of an individual.
