The author narrates a story of her desperate life with her mother and demonstrating how they were harassed because of their race. However, sexual objectification has been attached to the life of the main character. She lived in a society which grounded him with complicated affairs of premature sex due to the economic status of her family, race, and relation with the mother. Alice has shown some of the social issues that contributed to vulnerability to her personal perception and the decisions she made. The environment that the author relies on is not the privileged place where people have equal rights regardless of their social differences. It is a society that believes in revenge or paying a bad did with another bad action. She narrates how her mother would fall for other men who had no interest with neither of the two. The example being set by the mother is contrary to the social norms of the society. A mother is expected to be a role model to her daughter. There is a weak bond between the mother and daughter due to constricted communication as the mother lacks time for her daughter. The author speaks of how she was raped aged twelve and she never said it as in the society rape is never given any attention.

Americans by Sandra Cisneros

The story demonstrates the Americanization of others cultures and in this cases a Mexican culture. It introduces two small kids a boy and a girl who is waiting for their grandma to finish a church ritual. The kids seem to have forgotten the Mexican culture which is being continuously maintained and observed by the old grandmother ( Brown, 2013) . Further, these are playing near the plaza which is known of overtaken by the American culture with business people selling toys around this area. In contrary, the church seems still to maintain the original cultural values. The scene demonstrates a contrast between generations and their cultural values. Young generations are not paying attention to the cultural differences when interacting with others. It ends when the two kids are approached by the tourist who thought they are Mexican. However, to their surprise, the kids responded with perfect English. In a nut cell, the story demonstrates the theme of religious intolerance and racism. The church is located in the area where there are people of diverse culture; it should also be diverse its practices. In this case, the church should avoid religious intolerance to be able to serve all people regardless of their race. As result of racism, kids are not allowed to play within the plaza and enjoy fun, modern things. However, they are referring to themselves as Mericans as they can speak Spanish and English.

A Bloodsmoor Romance by Joyce Carol Oates

The author introduces social issues such as female sexuality, spiritualism and the nature of marriage. At first, the life of Deirdre Zinn portrays the nature of marriage and religious intolerance ( Oates, 2013) . The author demonstrates the kidnapping of Deirdre by a stranger who flies a black balloon. The society seems to believe in an occult power which is demonstrated by the Blavatsky supporting the girl to join the spiritual world. It is in the Deirdre that spirits rest in a true soul and she has been haunted since her childhood.
