The film ‘M’ by Fritz Lang is a police procedural film which is centered on the search of Elsie Beckmann’s killer by the police department and other criminals. Editing has been applied in the film in various capacities to show continuous progress. The use of match cuts in several scenes within the film help to show logical flow between the different scenes and help to build up on the story by providing concurring details in different scenes. Cuts also allow for the smooth transition between different scenes. An example is presented from the killer’s face to the mirror. This cut allows the audience to have a glimpse of how the murderer looks like, even as the police attempt to build a physical profile of him. This cut provides further detail that is not covered in the film, such as how the murderer views himself, and how the authorities perceive him to be.

The scenes from the cut have a graphic relationship, whereby an image of the murderer in the mirror leads to an image of the murderer as presumed by the authorities. The connection provided is that of the perceived image of the murderer. The mirror scene provides viewers with a hint on who the murderer is, and the distortion of his image in the mirror is a portrayal of the kind of person that the authorities are dealing with. The viewers can thus easily conclude that the man will not be easily captured, owing to his personality.
