Addiction is a condition where an individual is dependent on a substance or activity. Group therapy is one of the approaches used to treat and support addicts. It might be tempting to ascribe to one treatment protocol for every addict however; it is not a productive process. Addiction treatment is actually supposed to take an individualized approach tailor-made for each patient’s needs ("The need for Group Therapy", 2017). Group therapy is the most important part of the addiction treatment process. The International Journal of Group Psychotherapy argues that group therapy is the best choice of treatment for addiction ("The need for Group Therapy", 2017). The paper addresses the various uses of group therapy in the addiction treatment process

Groups are used to give the clients hope and distinguish issues that push them to addiction. Knowing issues or situations that push the client to addiction enables them to avoid such situations in future (Miller 2012). The group dynamic helps the clients to give feedbacks and facilitates sharing of experiences. This helps them give suggestions and offer to help each other on coping with the process. The other use of group therapy is to help clients get inspiration by listening to other individuals’ recovery and identify him/herself as an addict. The group therapy participants are accountable for each other’s sobriety hence they can help each other when one of them relapses (Velasquez & DiClemente, 2012).

In summation, the paper has established that group therapy is important for the addiction treatment process. It is good to avoid the universal approach while treating an addict but rather take an individualized approach. Group therapy is vital for the addiction intervention and treatment process. Some of the uses established are giving clients hope, inspiration, give feedbacks, promote accountability, identify oneself as an addict and finally sharing experiences.
