Location is the particular position or place where an institution is situated or located. Location is a factor that would make an institution competitive (Knego, Petljak, & Vouk, 2014). In this case, the location of a learning institution like a college or university can be a major factor of competition. Location of an institution can affect students’ choices when choosing which institutions to join. Institutions which are situated closer to students’ homes have a higher competitive lead than institutions which are further away from students’ homes (Aydın, 2013). This is due to the fact that many students prefer to go to institutions that are closer to them because of factors such as the cost of transport (Aydın, 2013).
Additionally, if an institution is located near the city center, it is more likely to attract student than an institution situated in a rural area hence making it more competitive (Aydın, 2013). This is backed by a research done by Okan University, where results showed that a higher percentage of students preferred institutions that are near the city center (Aydın, 2013). Students are attracted to schools located near the city center because learning resources required and transport are readily available in the city. Compared to institutions in rural areas where transport can even be problematic, institutions in urban areas are at an advantageous competitive position.

Conclusively, location is a major factor of competition especially when considering which institution to join. It is used by students to determine the closeness of the institution to either their home or the city center. Unsurprisingly, most students prefer institutions that are near their homes or the city center. As a result, institutions located closer to students’ homes or city center are more competitive than institutions located in rural areas.
