Question1

Creators of films use various narrative devices to convey their intended message. Literary devices include the choice of a setting, the plot, utilization of soundtracks, and narration. A combination of various literary devices altogether helps filmmakers achieve their intention. In the film La Casa de Papel ( Money Heist ), the plot is schemed to reflect resistance. The aim of the film is not a simple bank robbery. The masks that the thieves use are used during protests as a symbol of resistance. The tagline “Join the Resistance” is also used to urge viewers to fight for their rights without giving up and sacrifice for the sake of their friends.

The setting of La Casa de Papel in Spain also sets the mood of the movie. The film has a Spanish title, which prepares the audience for a film dominated by Spanish culture. Other than the American setting that most people are used to, the film setting shows that resistance is all over the world.

La Casa de Papel is largely a backstory narrated as a plan by the masterminds of the heist and acted out simultaneously. The backstory makes the film easy to follow through and is a major device that the script uses to catch the attention of the audience and appeal emotionally, an achievement that has contributed significantly to its popularity. The technique is especially important since the film is idea-intensive. Thus descriptions are better shown than narrated. To accompany the backstory are back flashes that help the audience understand a character’s reaction of choice. Cliffhangers are also extensively utilized in the film, when shifting from one episode the next, and even more when ending a season.

Question 2

a) It is possible to separate content from film craft, but only for experts in the field. For a layman, what matters most is the content. If the content is displeasing, then they do not appreciate film craft. Art is meant to serve beauty and truth, but it can be used to propagate hateful ideologies in cases where the production team chooses to ignore general guidelines and virtues. Therefore, no beauty is found in such an ugly past as it goes against humanity. Watching such a film is not okay as it pricks the conscience.

b) Vistas , a film of 2009, presses against racial discrimination and encourages the empowerment of African Americans. A woman of mixed ancestry struggles with an Equal Opportunity Form, an illustration of what people of color, especially immigrants, go through. The movie ought to be accepted by people of races because that is embracing humanity.

c) The film “The Birth of a Nation” is marred with several scenes of racism and stereotype of the blacks. In one scene, a white man wearing a black face mask makes sexual advances on a white lady. The lady flees and is chased by her assailant. She opts to throw herself off a cliff rather than succumb to the man’s advances. This scene is symbolic of rape cases and violence against women, which the film depicts to be predominant in the south. The scenes of vilification of the blacks are cross-cut with those of upholding the deeds of the whites. In one scene showing an image of a black man attacking other people, the creator uses parallel editing to show the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) rushing to the scene to save the victims. This heroine act juxtaposed to crime is intended to show the parallels between Southern blacks and whites. In another scene, the film depicts the South Carolina black law-makers as simians. In this scene, the lawmakers are eating bananas and ogling at women in the galleries. This scene is designed to create the perception that the black are perverted, regardless of their social class and status.
