The President of the United States is actively involved in numerous issues related to national and international affairs. There are many responsibilities associated with the position of the presidency. Therefore, assistance ought to be provided to help the president exercise his duties and achieve his goals. Primarily, this assistance is provided through the president’s cabinet and staff. The members of the Cabinet are selected by the president and confirmed by the Senate (Roos, Nd). The Cabinet is composed of the Vice President and the heads of the 15 departments (Roos, Nd). It is also divided into numerous departments. However, the Secretary of State is the most important Presidential Cabinet. This paper will discuss how the President’s Cabinet and Staff assist the President in exercising his duties and achieving his goals.
The President’s Cabinet and Staff advise the president on policies that are within the areas covered by the numerous departments. They advise the president on everything from educational policies to foreign affairs to the conservation of natural resources to terrorist threats. Additionally, the President’s Cabinet leads their respective departments, formulating policies as well as managing programs that each unit or department controls. For example, the Secretary of Transport has the responsibility of creating transportation modes and highway operations that are safe and accessible while the Secretary of Education has the responsibility of managing educational policies. All of the departments report back to the president the policies they manage as well as relevant issues within the areas so that the president can act on them in case any action is required. Through the opinions and advice provided by the Cabinet and his staff, the president can exercise his duties as well as achieve his goals.
