Learning about the roles and detailed descriptions of caregivers from my immediate neighbor was a perfect experience due to the level of understanding and the respect we render each other. The first question she asked me after exchanging pleasantries is, “do you ever think of the impact you can make in the society by caring for vulnerable people?” I have to admit that the question has been bothering me all for a while, but through my neighbor, I knew I would grasp ideas of caregiving. Maintaining a positive attitude towards caregiving was the first response she gave me after I asked about her perception of caregiving and other caregivers. She is taking care of a disabled elder. Although she is getting paid for the services, she asserted that it not an easy job. A positive attitude acts as a motivation is the driving force behind her zeal to work as a caregiver.
In the process of interviewing my neighbor, I realized that she had developed compassion for the physically challenged elder. The methods she was using to care for this vulnerable person, such as a quick response to her needs and the maintenance of hygiene in the house proved compassion for the job and the individual under her care. My neighbor’s action towards this vulnerable individual evoked my thought on the research paper I read about caregivers. According to Stjernswärd and Hansson, caregivers undergo stress and anxiety due to work overloads (Stjernswärd & Hansson, 2020). Although my neighbor did not complain of fatigue, I realized it from her expression and response to my questions. I further learned that caregivers must undergo ideal training to acquire skills in handling emotional aspects in the process of taking care of a vulnerable member of society. From the experience I gained from the interview, I am confident I will be in a position to volunteer as a caregiver.
