According to general trait and factor theory, occupational decision making can only be achieved when people have a good understanding of their own traits such as personal abilities and interests, when they have knowledge of the immediate market and when there is an objective judgment about the relationship between their personal traits and the labor market (Sharf, 2016). Therefore, if Pam wishes to help in organization development, she should consider these factors.
Self-understanding explains people’s successes and failures and it lies at the root of strong character. It gives people a better understanding of who they are so that they can understand what they need from other people to complement their deficiencies (Sharf, 2016). In order to gain self-understanding, Pam should think about what she is trying to achieve and in this case she is trying to help others through organizational development. Her artistic skills can lay a strong foundation for her to do that because they represent her potential. She has produced artistic brochures before and this mean that art is her best skill.

When working with Pam for career counseling, it is important to consider her qualifications, her experience and strengths/weaknesses (Sharf, 2016). Pam has never enjoyed any other subject in high school except art although she passed in all other courses. Therefore, she should consider art because she enjoyed it and excelled in it. She has experience in political issues where she expressed her ideas through creative art and she impressed both her art teacher and adults in the local Republican Party. Her strengths includes being able to work in a team since she values other people’s work as well as her own and she likes to be with other people. Her weakness is that she makes decision based on her feelings. Feelings may get in the way of performance and most leaders should avoid being too emotional when making serious decision. Pam will gain career confidence, insight and encouragement when she goes through these steps in career counseling.
