Q: Thinking about an Excel Dashboard using the data from Unit 1 and your assignment work so far, what are some design decisions you would consider for your visualizations? What metrics or statistics would you use, have any of Excel’s functions helped to make the analysis easier?
In any dataset there are two distinct type of variables, categorical and continuous. The categorical variables usually are part of a larger sum of values therefore these variables individually define a category within the dataset. On the other hand continuous variables generally pertain to the use of numeric values while inference on these can be made by using arithmetic mean, arithmetic sum and other metricized results. For our dataset the primary statistic relates to a continuous variable known as ‘value’ which in Microsoft Excel can be isolated by filtering the column ‘H’ and selecting a single region. Consequently, the resulting summarized tabulation provides us with varying values along with the corresponding years and months while grouping them together we can then successfully map a line graph to visually demonstrate our results. The below visualization is an example of how variables can be graphed with the current dataset.

Coding for any dataset, large or small, requires a very stimulated attention to detail; it is a facet in which margin of error is significantly less and therefore my experience with coding has been a challenging feat. For programmers, the construction of logic is extremely important therefore it becomes imperative that we use algorithms so that the construct of the application or whichever set of code we might be willing to develop is understood by each and every contributor in the team. This SOP, by large, is implemented by most development team across the world as it enables coherence among software developers irrespective of their niche are of expertise or the language they might be coding in. When I am being supervised by anyone who does understand the coding language I implement in my program I would advised on the being extra careful with syntax and the implementation of the logic used.

Data warehousing has seven steps via which it is implemented in any given project. Steps 1 to 3 constitute of determining business objectives, collecting and analysing data and identifying core business processes. Following these steps an organization develops a coherent framework upon which they can successfully implement a business model. The remaining steps include constructing a conceptual data model, locating data sources along with planning data transformations, setting up a tracking duration and finally implementing the plan.

Big data and the use of Hadoop for real time analysis is something that is most interesting to me. It provides a robust platform in manipulating data sources and is a reliable and efficient application to handle an expanding business.
