Employees hold the key to organizational growth and performance. In order to motivate employees to enhance their productivity, firms need to invest in the wellbeing and competence of the employees. Development and reward are some of the approaches that have proven most effective in promoting employee productivity. In an article that was featured in the online edition of the Economist, some of the measures that organizations can adopt as part of employee development and reward are outlined. This article is informative and would be an important resource for any employer looking to create a motivated and highly productive workforce.

As noted above, the Economist article focuses on the strategies that help to enhance employee development and reward. The article begins with a description of a firm that has achieved impressive employee productivity through investment in development and reward (“What Employers can do”, 2017). Among other measures, this firm has invested heavily in employee training and education. Moreover, the leaders in this organization have created a workplace environment that encourages employee innovation and engagement. The article also addresses how the organization offers competitive and generous compensation to employees while equipping them with the social and technical skills that they need to excel in their jobs (“What Employers can do”, 2017). Another measure that the organization has adopted is that it guides and supports employees as they seek to build their careers.

The organization covered in the article provides employers with useful insights that they can integrate into their employee development and reward initiatives. There are other measures that have been proven to be effective in enhancing employee engagement and productivity. Among these measures are empowering the employees and establishing relationships that are based on trust (Eisenhauer, n.d). Additionally, it is critical for employers to establish a culture where employees are recognized and rewarded for their dedication. Flexible work schedules, the provision of such facilities as parking, and creating a workplace environment that is conducive are other strategies that help to boost employee productivity (Michalowicz, n.d). If they are to be successful in persuading their employees to work harder, organizations need to implement these strategies.
