Employers are required to do a thorough background investigation, reviewing both public and confidential information about the applicants before hiring them. Failure to do so may result in negligent hiring claims to the employers.

Criminal History Checks

A criminal history check is a vital step when hiring applicants since this tends to reveal everything about one’s criminal history. This entails not only previous convictions and sentencing, but also any previous arrests. Hiring applicants who have faced previous felony convictions or some misdemeanor criminal acts should be avoided since it may result in a poor reflection on the company (Fedorka, 2018).

Credit Checks

Information about existing debts and whether or not one has been paying their required bills is vital to the employer. This should be highly considered especially when the applicant will be dealing directly with either the company’s or other people’s money. Intuitively, employees in financial trouble may be more tempted to inappropriately use some of the accessible funds (Lachnit, 2002).

Employment History and Neighborhood Checks

The employment history aspects entail contacting the preceding employer and inquiring some basic questions concerning the applicant’s personality. Questions like whether the applicant was excessively late or absent and the reason for resignation will be often asked. Neighborhood checks, on the other hand, is often carried out by background investigators who speak with both the current and past neighbors in order to have an idea of the existing nature of the aspiring applicant. This will help create a better picture of the applicant’s overall background.

Conclusion

To sum up, background checks are vital when hiring new applicants in order to avoid negligent hiring claims. Thorough background checks should be conducted by employers in order to acquire relevant information about the applicants. These background checks include the applicant’s criminal history, credit history, previous employment history, and neighborhood checks.
