In society, the concept of functional beauty and how it is perceived is analysed in terms of the role played by beliefs and particular expectations in our perceptions. Beauty as shown in the book “ugly truth of beauty” show how women’s beauty can go to lengths of distortions and tremendous editing so as to achieve a sense of belonging and acceptance in the community. The paper looks at how our attitude through study of the Halo Effect can cause different perception and how we judge other people based on their physical appearance. What are the advantages of flawless beauty perception and their general disadvantages in our communities today?

Perception on the social platform is how people form impressions and make inferences of other people creating their personalities. In the book “ugly truth of beauty” it is evident that women have a low self-esteem compared to men, hence this causes them to alter their perception of beauty (Barry, 2014). By doing so, it creates a general outcome by the public on how beauty really is accepted by the society. For example, an advertisement of an extremely beautiful photo of a model is likely to be taken as beautiful since it what the general public view as beautiful. Recent study shows that the judgement of beauty is different from cognitive or moral judgement since it is subjected exclusively to the person making the judgement.

The heuristic view of attitude explains how attitude affects our decision making and problem solving as well. The Halo Effect, is just the positive attitude that is shown towards a particular person or object. It makes as make quick judgements on people depending on how they interest or impress you. The saying that image is the first impression pretty much sums up the whole idea(Wolf, 2015) .

Research shows that women are beings of low self-esteem when compared to men. Beauty, thus becomes an area of concern in trying to keep up with their insecurities. Cosmetics and beauty, therefore have become the norm in beauty perception among women and this has led in society judging others based on their look. Image editing in photo-shoots tend to hide the flaws and perceive beauty as the flawlessness of skin hence leading in biased conclusions among people (Wolf, 2015).

The main advantage of functional perception and judgement is the creation of self-esteem among women hence leading themselves appropriately in society. A study in 2015 shows how women who felt to be beautiful in public than others are highly likely to succeed than the less beautiful ones. The power of perception and judgement in modern society can, on the other hand, be misleading and cause unappropriated attention to outward perception rather than the true beauty which is a person’s true character, purity, integrity and harmony as described by Plato in his early philosophies.

The halo effect as discussed above has shown that our characterization and judgement can be affected. From the two images viewed from the video, woman A, who is the natural person is less likely to be pretty and portrays a rather dull figure. She has a slender face and a short eyebrow width which makes her less beautiful. Woman B on the other hand has a narrow face and a long neck which makes her completely beautiful to the observer.

In conclusion, it is seen that our daily perception of people based on their beauty is large and this has caused the beauty industry especially for women to boom. ‘Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’ is what is said about beauty and this has caused how we view ourselves affect how we view others.
