The act of taking good notes is critical to learning and being successful in school. Listening to lectures from the instructor or reading textbooks must be complemented by good note taking. As a student does a personal reading, he may be engaged with in studying which implies seeking the depth of information. It is significant for a student to know how he should study, what to study and the perfect model for test-taking procedures. Learning is the process of engaging in active learning. The students spend his time more actively in learning a topic to have a deeper understanding of it (Illeris, 2018). Students must demonstrate a positive attitude toward challenging learning atmospheres that cause them to learn more. This paper will explore further these aspects of studying and test taking, listening and note-taking, learning, memory and thinking, and time and money.

Effective studying is a way of preparing for the test. Preparation by way of spending many hours reading is necessary to attain a high score on any test. Once the student has studied, he must arrive early and be relaxed in the exam room to be confident to tackle any papers. The learner may resolve to do a memory dump whereby he writes down information of all he would probably know before beginning the test (Illeris, 2018). Before jotting the answers to the tests, the student using read and understand the test directions very carefully and consider the details of each question.

Listening and Note Taking

Good note taking ability needs the student to mobilize his attentional focus on the instructor. Students are obliged to be equipped and focused. They must take heed or read keenly, considering significant details and harmonizing new information to the knowledge learned previously. They must be keen to take down fundamental facts, concepts, and connecting aspects to recall this information when studying. Good note taking also underlies a student’s potential to turn information gained through listening to a lecture into a consistent and meaningful written as well as composed message (Illeris, 2018). This would require complicated explanations, technical vocabulary or numeric data. The students must involve their abilities in both language and spatial ordering to convert the information he or she is listening to something sensible.

A good listening tendency is to do a pre-reading activity before one gets to the lecture hall. A student should learn to be an active listener, and develop his paraphrasing and summarizing skills to take notes. They must focus their attention, ask themselves questions, relate ideas, and attempt to have a picture of significant ideas. After taking notes, the student should review their notes immediately after the class is ended. Taking notes should be followed by concept mapping strategies and recognize the various patterns of organization that can be sourced form textbooks (Illeris, 2018). While listening to the teacher during the lesson, general capture concepts, and not illustrative opinions when taking notes.

Memory and Thinking

Active learning is essential, as it will determine what stays on the memory. One must also maintain a constructive attitude towards challenging environments that allow the student to gain more. Memory is broken into two kinds as short-term or long-term memory (Illeris, 2018). As much time is spent in studying, and active engagement in learning makes one remember all he or she has been learning since it has been retained in their memory.

Critical thinking is also important, and it is open to improvement. A learner must be keen to explore critically what he or she is reading and learning. There is the end of the chapter questions that can be subjected to thought and exploration on the mind as well as proposed ideas or recommendations for further research (Illeris, 2018). Listen attentively to the teacher is essential to get the final instructions of the instructor. It is these details that the student will ponder and put to memory to achieve high grades.

Time and Money

As a student, there is need to maximize time to make progress in one’s learning. Learners should schedule some time to receive core instruction and devote more hours to study. Students must be keen on how they choose to utilize their learning time, deal with their workloads and engage without the support of anyone. Time must be devoted to group work with other students as well as consultations with the teacher (Illeris, 2018). In addition, the student may be required to devote money to buy instructional materials for their study. They have to sacrifice some penny to pay their instructors for extra coaching. Sometimes they may also be required to buy books that pertain some subjects to expound on their knowledge.

Conclusion

Education is a continuous process, and it will become effective if the student is sensitive to apply all the learning skills. He should plan himself accordingly so that time is devoted to listening to the lectures and studying diligently to pass the tests. The student should prioritize his information so that he establishes which one should be retained in mind for long or shortly. Listening requires being keenness so that one can engage the instructors in questions for clarity purposes. Both good listening and studying require the student to put down notes.
