Eye contact has been generally regarded as important as it shows that one is engaged in a discussion with the other party. Looking at someone in the eyes shows that one is interested in what they are saying and is actually listening. In the counseling setting, eye contact is critical as it can be used to develop trust and improve communication. Trust is a critical component in counseling as it ensures that both parties are confident and self-assured in the information being shared. Having an eye contact thus enhances this trust as it shows that the people one is speaking with desires to engage in the conversation. Eye contact is also critical in the counseling setting as it is used to build connection with the other individual. This is important in the counseling setting as building such a connection is important to realize a successful session. Keeping eye contact in the counseling setting can thus enhance the counseling experience by building trust and creating a deeper connection. 

In the professional setting, maintaining eye contact is critical to building respect and acknowledging the presence of other individuals in the conversation. When making a presentation, making an eye contact can be important in building a connection with the audience. Eye contact also emphasizes the strengths of one’s message and it shows the enthusiasm of an individual for the products and services sold by the company. This can be used to project the overall image of professionalism. Additionally, when speaking in the professional setting, eye contact can be critical in capturing the attention of other individuals. As the audience, eye contact would thus be applied to show that one is deeply interested in what the other individual is talking about. Eye contact when speaking thus captures attention and when listening it shows interest in the topic being discussed.
