Technological advances have been developed with the intention of changing the amount of effort or time taken to accomplish a given task. This article focuses on how digital technologies have compressed or fundamentally altered the understanding of time and space. The use of technology does not actually speed up time, it is our brain that learns to act quicker but people are too busy into these technologies to appreciate the extra time technology buys them.

Any time someone is on their phone or a computer, it feels as though time passes more quickly than when without. When involved in an activity with a digital device, it is a norm to keep focused on what is in front or what is coming in the immediate future. When these devices run out of power, the experience feels like a lifetime. The time is constant but the mind activities are different. Someone with digital devices keep themselves and their brains active while those without have lesser brain activity thus keeps reflecting on the time differences every now and then. Being able to access a load of information in a touch of a button creates leads to crave for information urgency thus the speedy perception of time. Being constantly active gives one a hard time when asked to slow down or shut down.

While digital devices help in keeping one active, sometime they contribute to time losses too. When two people are eating, and one eats while scrolling on a phone, it is easy for one with a phone to lose track and be over cultivated in their device thus taking more time to finish their food. Technology gets people’s attention and traps them in the moment. They are partially present in the task at hand.

The perception of digital technologies being time saving is dependent on the activity at hand. Once people get used to digital devices and would rather be using them other than doing anything else, they become addicted and these devices are no longer a choice. In the addictions, they look forward to the next task and do not recognize the time they have saved.
