Skin Absorption Analogy Scenario

The skin absorption process can be equated to water trickling down the rocks of a mountainside. Just like the way water moves from the surface into the percolations on a rock, skin absorption follows the same strategy as it uses the openings of the body created by hair and glands on the body surface. The more the amount of water exposed on the rocks, the greater amount of water that will pass through the rock inside. Similarly, the greater the exposure to chemicals on the skin's surfaces the more amounts of chemicals that will be absorbed in the body. The physical condition of the rock influences the amount of water that passes through it from a river. Also, the physical condition of the skin influences some chemicals passing through. This could be measured by the condition of the skin and the absence of skin infections. As water passes through the rocks of a mountain side, various layers are passed from the surface to the deep layers. The skin absorption follows the same pattern with the epidermis being the fast to absorb as it passes various layers into the deeper layers.

Personal Care Product Use

The cosmetic industry has over the recent years won the heart of many ladies especially in their pursuit of making them look more attractive. However, some of the ingredients used in making the cosmetic products may contain toxins that have adverse side effects on the skin of the user. Annie Leonard tries to send a message that the industries producing these commodities do not carry out quality checks and accreditation on these products. The agency mandated to do the regulation-Federal Drug Administration does not make any effort to test the safety of the products. Sometimes these companies do not even list the full number of ingredients used to come up with a product, raising questions about the safety of the whole product.

Many cases have been witnessed where people have used a specific product for the purpose of achieving a cosmetic effect, but the general outcome becomes shocking. Some products may lead to an involuntary skin lightening effect on the user meaning that they have a detrimental effect on the pigmentation material in the body known as melanin. Some have caused the users to develop rashes, acne, and wrinkles after a period of use. Others have led to more serious issues such as skin cancer. This proves Annie Leonard's assertions that the ingredients used in making the product are not checked, tested and regulated to ensure safety on the consumer.

Skin Mapping

It involves the sampling and mapping of bacteria and chemicals found on the human skin in 3D images. The artistic representation is vital in determining the location and intensity of the molecules. The skin mapping is important in depicting the unique composition of the skin revealing the type of food the bacteria feed on, the medicine they consume and other body products they use to thrive. The relationship between the mapped microbe and the environment can provide crucial information on someone's food and the drugs they use, their hygiene and their beauty cosmetic practices. The information obtained through skin mapping can also be important in evaluating the precision medicine to be used against such microbes. Furthermore, skin mapping has enabled the determination of the chemical signature which harbors specific combination of bacteria. Skin mapping can also determine the lifestyle of an individual regarding their hygiene and their usage of personal care products. Also, the mapping can also reveal areas of the body that are hotspots of microbes such as the feet and the acne regions.
