According to Hardman and Egan (2016), human exceptionality is a multidisciplinary approach which describes individuals’ exceptions or differences. In the first chapter, the article focuses on learning behaviors of the disabled or differently abled. Disability is described as a label, and people in this group are different exhibiting labels in diverse ways (Verdugo, et al. 2012). It is considered to affect everyday lives as it involves lack of ability to make use of personal body potential. Further, authors note that disability is not absolute as it hinders an individual to perform a certain activity provided there is no friendly alternative way of performance.

The next concept of the articles is the approaches to understanding human exceptionalities. The developmental approach requires use of statistics such observing people conduct that frequently occur at a particular age. The second approach is cultural which focuses on the society values. It differs with development approach in that human differences are brought about by values possessed within a society. Self-labeling approach is the process that is practiced by everyone though it may not be recognized by other people. Thus, it emphasizes on how individuals view themselves. Though, in some situations the individual may not accept the label given to them by the community.

Cultural & Linguistic Diversity

The authors assess some complex concepts related to the cultural and linguistic diversity and how they affect children in public education. Hardman and Egan (2016) suggest that the core role of special education is to help children with disabilities to learn. It emphasizes on the differences of every child so that they may receive instructions which are individually designed.

Multicultural and diversity concept focuses on children from CLD environments and those failing in general classrooms (Hardman and Egan, 2016). For instance, increased population in U.S such as Latino and African American, thus, increasing ethnic and culturally diverse groups. Authors have noted some of the non-discriminatory assessment tools which have been developed to enhance culture fairness and reduce biases based on language and cultural diversity.
