A fully operational and well-managed human resource department is important for growing establishments such as Philips Furniture Store. Notably, the role of a HR manager is crucial to creating a work environment conducive to increased sales and quality customer service. For this reason, it is an honor to take on this professional role and work to organize the HR activities necessary to sustain the operations at Philip’s Furniture Store. In my capacity as HR manager, I intend to organize the various human resource activities with specific focus on certain areas. Therefore, this essay is a look at activities that I will focus on and the reasons why they will take priority.
Main activities of focus
There are a number of activities that I would mention to Mr. Philip as my point of focus as HR manager. One such HR activity is selecting and hiring employees. Evidently, the Philip’s Furniture store has significantly expanded since it started. Therefore, employees are needed to cater to the increased customer base and higher demand for products and services. The process of selecting and hiring is extensive and requires a keen eye. However, ensuring that it is carried out the right way will guarantee skilled and capable employees for the business. This is important for the furniture store because there is a need for employees who can conduct business professionally with minimal supervision. Also, hiring seasoned employees puts the company in a position to confront its competitors and create more market opportunities. For Mr. Philip, new employees will give a fresh start to the business and motivate the older staff to stay alert and active in their work areas or they will be faced out by new personnel.

Performance appraisals will also be a point of focus. This step involves setting goals for employees and evaluating their performance against these goals. Through performance appraisals, the management can pinpoint the problematic department or personnel and find solutions for the inadequacies. Additionally, performance appraisals keep employees on their toes. With the set goals and a defined means of performance appraisal, they understand what the company expects of them. Consequently, they work hard and smart to attain their goals. Performance appraisal is an activity that builds the rapport between management and their employees. It allows Mr. Philip as well as the HR department to acknowledge the good work that their employees are doing and work to improve together to improve areas of concern.
Compensation is another activity that I would focus on as HR manager. It is a priority that all employees are well appreciated for the work they do within the company budget. Ensuring proper compensation starts from reviewing salaries and benefit packages ( Kavanagh, & Johnson, 2017) . This approach is welcome from the employees and encourages them to work even harder for their organization. Also, I would introduce a reward system that ensures employees are acknowledged for meeting their targets or surpassing them. This compensation method goes beyond a financial approach. It will include other compensation forms such as promotions, and reward titles such as ‘employee of the month’. Proper compensation creates a positive and competitive work environment that allows the furniture business to thrive as well. Notably, the cost incurred during compensation is returned in term of increased sales and happier customers. Therefore, it is a worthy investment for the company.
First Action
As HR manager my first action would be training for all employees. This process involves re-acquainting all employees with the company standards. As the company expanded it is likely employees are less supervised and thus had more freedom to set standards for themselves. However, training and development ensure that all departments and employees operate at the same quality level. The training process will take place at different levels. For instance, the departmental heads will receive off-site training, and lower level staffs will attend mandatory classes that cover their docket. It is intended that the training process will continue on a daily basis. For instance, each department should have meetings before each shift to actively discuss arising concerns with regard to operations. As HR manager it is a priority to enforce training to support consistency of service in all the Philip’s Furniture branches around town.
Training is especially important in creating a positive work culture. Such a work environment allows employees to coordinate their efforts and work towards similar goals. Additionally, it eliminates poor habits that affect employees such as insubordinations and laziness. In the same respect, it motivates positive attitudes in the work environment such as going the extra mile for a customer. Training creates personal fulfillment in employees because they learn and apply a new lesson every day. Increasing their skills during this process gives them confidence in the interaction with customers on a daily basis. As a HR manager, it is a great achievement to have employees that understand their work.
In conclusion, the position of HR manager at Philip’s Furniture Store is not a small docket. With the stores spread out over various locations, it is important to create a system that accommodates all employees and coordinates their efforts. Therefore, attaining success will be a team effort from all departments and employees at all levels. Personally, it is my intention to help the employees at the store stands out in the eyes of the customer. Satisfying the clients through well-informed and well-treated staff is the priority for the HR department and the company as well.
