According to Spielman et al. (2014) organizational and industrial psychology explores human factors and their influence when forming relationships. However, I-O can be applied in non-business situations.

Applications in Non-business Situations

I-O psychology can be applied to help individuals struggling with drug and substance abuse. In some cases, people sink into drug and substance abuse due to struggling relationships. Since I-O psychology analyzes how human factors impact relationships, it can be used to repair broken relationships. Resolving conflicts is an important element in any society. Industrial and organizational psychology concepts can be used to resolve different types of conflicts in the society. For instance, conflicts arising in school settings can be handled by analyzing human factors among students contributing to the conflict. One recurring conflict among students involves bullying. Such a problem is solved by identifying human factors such as power struggles among students and their contribution to the conflict. Furthermore, the students are helped to live harmoniously without engaging in similar conflicts. The overall goal is to create a peaceful environment where every student learns peacefully.

Teachers often participate in talent selection among their students. I-O psychology elements can be applied in such a situation since it uses research methods and approaches to reach a given result (Spielman et al., 2014). In such a case, a teacher analyzes issues such as life satisfaction and student’s interests in a given line of talent. Instead of forcing a student to struggle with academics when they are talented in another discipline like soccer, a teacher can use I-O psychology concepts to develop the talent.
