Information literacy refers to the set of abilities and skills requiring an individual to recognise the need for information while utilising appropriate knowledge and expertise to locate, evaluate, and utilise the needed information effectively. From this perspective, an information literate individual should determine the extent of the needed information while accessing the information effectively and efficiently. Additionally, information literate person needs to evaluate the information and sources critically in pursuit of quality implementation of the located information. The purpose of this essay is to describe my experiences using resources including concerns when conducting academic research through a University Library. The essay will focus on diverse areas of concern such as the development of a research strategy, utilisation of the search function within a database, and evaluating sources. Finally, the essay will explain the influence of using the University Library to improve your experience in conducting research.
During this research encounter, the first step, I did embark on was the choosing of the right or appropriate topic, which was not too broad or too narrow in its scope. The process was essential in the exploration of the research idea to focus on in the collection of data or information from diverse databases. In the second instance, I was able to assess the general background information. From this illustration, learning about the fields of study is essential in creating effective searches through general and specialised encyclopaedias and dictionaries to gain background information. Following this exercise, I sought to utilise the University Library search engine towards finding in-depth information while searching the Classic Catalog for the relevant books and other resources. It is ideal to demonstrate the fact that books are a great resource for the exploration of information in the relevant ideas. The resources tend to offer specific information such as historical perspectives, diverse opinions, and previous research activities on the relevant subject matter.
Following the execution of the previous objectives, I sought to locate valuable research articles for the research topic. In the University Library, I did develop a search term to generate valuable research articles; thus, the platform to utilise scholarly/peer reviewed articles in the assessment of the research topic. The study was essential in the minimization of the volume of research articles to the recently published for effectiveness and efficiency in understanding the scope of the study. Additionally, the approach was crucial in the maximisation of the quality of the research.
