Summary

The article “Management information systems and its application in Business Decision Making” by Surwade discusses about the significance of using management information system (MIS) in making decisions in business. Management information system is a computer-based system, which offers manager tools to manage, evaluate, and organize departments effectively. It support a broad range of business operations and facilitate interaction with service providers, customers, and suppliers of the organization. The support it offers to the business functions and assists specialized staff to achieve the objectives and goals of the business by examining and designing systems. The main role of MIS in an organization is to provide the management with information that can be used in the decision making process. Managers have an important responsibility of making decisions that are suitable to market needs and MIS helps them to execute their role in the organization effectively. It allows for effective and efficient planning as well as control of the management functions. It is instrumental in offering the management with timely and quick information thereby facilitating achievement of organizational goals. MIS is important in providing information regarding surplus capacity, wastages and losses, labor turnover, and idle time thus useful in controlling costs within the organization. MIS alerts the management about the organizational strengths thereby allowing the organization to grab the available opportunities thus have a competitive edge in the organization (Surwade, 2016).

Despite the benefits of MIS in the decision making process, there exist certain challenges that affect the efficacy of MIS. These challenges include management of MIS requires a lot of expertise, which most organizations lack and MIS is dynamic in nature, which makes it challenging for some organizations to maintain the propositions, strategies, and principles. MIS is not adaptable thus poses challenges for MIS theorists to address the differing situations which require different decisions. In addition, some organizations lack a well-defined decision making system, the MIS programs are relatively costly making it hard for small organizations to afford it, and MIS is oriented more on science field whereas business is art-oriented, thus makes it difficult to handle business situations adequately (Surwade, 2016).

Critique

The paper is well written and the author has presented the facts based on the theme. The author clearly explains the importance of management information in business operations and supports with adequate evidence from various sources. The author as well acknowledges both the benefits and its disadvantages in an organization. To support this claim, the author uses various examples of organizations and how they managers take active role in implementing and applying MIS in their decision making process. For instance, the author points out that most organizations lack a well-defined decision making system such that even if the business has the right MIS tools, they can achieve very little in enhancing decision-making process (Surwade, 2016).

The paper does not present an abstract. The authors starts by defining the meaning of management information systems then provides an introduction. An abstract is crucial in a research paper that offers a summary of the entire research paper ( Turabian, 2018). The paper uses simple language that makes it easy for the readers to understand. The paper is well organized and each point presented separately. Headings and subheadings have been used to present different points in an orderly manner.

The author has summed the research up well by stating the significance of MIS and providing recommendations on how to overcome obstacles to effective implementation of MIS and how to apply MIS in the organization to achieve the company’s objectives and goals effectively. The MIS can provide a manager with information to make effective decisions and to plan the business operations and activities effectively. The paper provides a good concept for the way various problems surrounding MIS should be handled. For instance, the author recommends “A well-defined decision making system should be fledged in businesses so as to provide a viable working environment for MIS” (Surwade, 2016).

The paper offers concrete guidelines for applying MIS and addressing the challenges that comes with its implementation. In other words, it translates easily to the daily operations of the business. The paper was formatted perfectly based on APA writing style well spaced. The paper is arranged well including introduction, body, and conclusion. The paper has provided necessary details that aligns with the topic of article ( Creswell & Creswell, 2017).

Overall, the article has great credibility. It is straightforward from the beginning to the end. The ideas are well articulated and the author engages readers throughout the entire text. The author has used good examples that are relevant to the daily operations of an organization in a business environment. It is a good, well-written article comprising of crucial message for managers, employees, stakeholders and organizations. It is relevant and convincing to current business organizations, which are constantly experiencing technological advancements and changes in the market environment. Although the study has merit, there is need to increase the power of the study. The study should include a research methods used for conducting research, an abstract, and results of findings ( Hulland Baumgartne & Smith, 2018).

From biblical perspective, MIS is an important concept in management of an organization. The concept of management can be traced back to the beginning of the earth where Adam and Eve were put in it to manage the garden. It is evident that management is applied in every aspect of our lives and we need relevant tools to allow us to effective execute the duty of management ( Cafferky, 2015). A Christian manager, they can apply the MIS as a technique while reflecting the Christian faith in managing the organization and making effective decisions ( Tryon, 2018). Therefore, MIS is a crucial tool in helping managers to operate businesses effectively.
