Intelligence tests are psychological assessments that designed to measure the ability to think and reason rather than acquired knowledge. They mostly measure a diversity of mental functions, such as comprehension and verdict. The core objective for these tests is to obtain an idea of a person’s intellectual potential. Below in an analysis on my experience with these tests and my reflection on the issue.

My Experience

I once did an IQ test when trying to get admission into a local institution and my experience was very fascinating and eye- opening. It was a two hour group test at a psychologist’s office. After verifying our identity cards, we were supplied with pencils and booklets after which the psychologist walked us through the general guidelines.

There were many segments in the tests and some of them involved a full-scale IQ test which was very exciting. Other sections involved visual and graphic assessments that involved arranging colored blocks into pre-set shapes in a given time. In optical puzzles one was supposed to figure out the next shape in a series of patterns.

In other sections, there was an exam where it was obligatory to explain the similarities between two words or concepts. On the other hand, there were parts where we were required to fill in blank spaces, memorize and remember twenty products plus their origin. At the end of the test, the psychologist immediately took our papers leaving us with no possible way to double check our answers.

In general, I was not satisfied with my performance because the time was very limited. I did surpass the expectations I had placed for myself even though I believed I had enough time to think. It was not until the test came to an end hat I realized a person’s IQ mostly depends on their fluid intelligence while under pressure. One had to quickly assimilate and interpret information from a structure of abstract figures and develop conclusions, while contradicting the proposed solutions.

Reflection of the Experience

The entire experience enabled me to gauge myself and determine my level of intelligence. Some sections of the test were easy whereas others were extremely hard. I believe that intelligence tests are designed to measure not just our knowledge, but also our cognitive skills and the way we perceive things in life. The tests are also helpful because they measure a person’s strengths and weaknesses through including their intuition ( Taylor & Heaton, 2011 ). This in turn helps them to concentrate more on their gifts, rather than try to improve their natural feebleness. I highly recommend getting a test for purposes of getting personal and professional insights.

Knowledge gained from reading the text

These tests allow professionals to have a uniform way of comparing a person’s performance with that of other people who are similar in age. Anastasi (2015) argues that they are excellent predictors of academic achievement and they also provide an outline of a person’s mental capability.

Intelligent tests are administered for different motives; individually controlled assessments are customarily used for making vital decisions such as diagnosis or placing a person in special education system. Group IQ tests are sometimes used to identify extraordinary students. These assessments provide a measure of a person’s intelligence by providing them with a series of tests that be equated to a figure.
