It is my belief that the teaching profession is noble. I have heard of teachers being lauded for exceptional deeds of making sacrifices to become role models and promoting creativity. Teachers are heroes who shape the minds of young students, while guiding them to realize their true potential in education. Although the teaching profession comes with great rewards, it also presents several challenges. As the reality of not all that glitters is gold, I am prepared to face challenges such as difficulty in balancing different student needs, respecting expectations from school administrations, and helping both parents and students meet their long-term goals; however, I expect to be rewarded with an increase in my leadership skills, the joy of shaping the future generation, and meeting exciting and impressing people.

Rewards of Teaching

According to Ryan, Cooper, and Bolic (2016), an effective teacher is able to make good decisions as a leader. Since teaching includes guiding and leading students to achieve their educational goals, one of the best rewards I am looking forward to by teaching in this school is sharpening my leadership skills through practice. Also, this school has a strong culture of professional development for its workers. Therefore, I believe that this opportunity will help shape my talent by compelling me to pursue strategic development in management and leadership positions such as being the head of subject departments. Opportunities provided by the teaching profession are abounding. Apart from gaining leadership skills, I am also looking forward to meeting exciting and impressing people. This opportunity will be offered by the great level of interaction I expect between colleagues, parents, students and other stakeholders within the school.

Moreover, working with young minds is thrilling. The young generation in schools is being shaped to be leaders of tomorrow without boundaries. As a teacher, one spends most of their time living in the minds of their students. Hence, this will help me grow my courage and motivation. Apart from teaching subjects outlined in the school curriculum, I ought to guide students to be all-round. Hence, this will help shape young people to become reliable citizens to their communities, which is joyful as I will have taken part in shaping the future generation. I will impact the learner’s thinking skills, promoting innovation and creativity, teamwork, and resilience. Subsequently, I will be a role model for many young people, a reward I have always longed for.

Challenges of Teaching

Though a worthy professional, teaching has its own challenges due to many expectations from students, administrators, and parents. One of the challenges I expect to encounter in this institution is the difficulty of balancing the different learning needs of students. According to Ryan, Cooper, and Bolic (2016), it is a teacher’s expectation that students perform well in school. Nonetheless, some students are slow while others are quick. Also, some students learn better while listening to lectures while others do better when reading texts. As such, it is hard to identify and differentiate the specific needs of each student. Failure to identify the student’s specific needs in a class may lead to poor academic, social, and cognitive development. All in all, I will overcome this challenge by incorporating several modes of teaching, and make lessons as interesting as possible. Additionally, differentiating dissimilar needs for every student will also help in assisting those that require special consideration.

While teachers have the responsibility of ensuring that all students are engaged in class, I should make sure that the school’s expectations are met. Nonetheless, striking a balance between individual goals and the goals of school while making sure that parent’s and student’s goals are met prove to be problematic. At times there could be many activities going on in the school that a single teacher may not be aware of. This includes government arrangements, parent arrangements, and club activities among others, which are all important. To this effect, Ryan, Cooper, and Bolic (2016) posits that every teacher is required to have proper planning skills. Therefore, to cope with this challenge, I will assume a more flexible approach in my planning as well as embrace good communication skills to cope with unforeseen circumstances.

Furthermore, the challenge of helping parents and students attain their long-term goals is bound to occur in the course of working in this school. As a teacher, one belongs to a community that includes parents, students, and other individuals. I understand most students do not fully understand the value of education. Usually, different backgrounds and specificity of needs portray a challenge in guiding all parents and learners that come for help as some may surpass my capacity as a teacher. To cope with this challenge, I will have to cooperate with other institutions like social service and religious organizations to ensure that the long-term goals of both parents and students are achieved.

Conclusion

One of the reasons I became a teacher is my belief in a better tomorrow. Though teachers are not paid much, rewards such an increase in my leadership skills, the joy of shaping the future generation and meeting exciting and impressing people is all I need. However, several challenges lay on the way such as the difficulty of balancing between different student needs, respecting expectations from the school administration, and helping both parents and students meet their long-term goals. It is my belief that my rewards outdo the challenges because I have a plan to evade them. Therefore, I am ready to have the chance to work in this school.
